Job DescriptionJob Description Under the supervision of the TRIO SSS/TS Programs Director, the Student Support Services Advisor is responsible for assisting the Director in all facets of operating the TRIO Student Support Services Program, including assisting TRIO SSS Program participants with course selection each term, identifying financial resources, transferring to 4-year institutions, tutoring assistance, career exploration, along with life and personal success training.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • To understand and commit to the Mission of the College ~ Dodge City Community College provides a student-centered learning environment where students can achieve their educational, personal, and career goals.
  • Outreaches, identifies, and selects eligible TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program participants.
  • Informs students, faculty, and staff of the TRIO SSS Program goals and purposes.
  • Develops Individual Progress Reports (Educational Action Plans) and required documentation of services provided for program participants.
  • Coordinate and provide comprehensive academic advising, academic coaching, and all Student Support Services advising/counseling, including personal, academic, group counseling, career and individual, to TRIO SSS Program participants regarding college course selection.
  • Provides financial aid assistance and advising pertaining to FAFSA and assistance in applying for any additional scholarships.
  • Coordinate new and continuing TRIO SSS Program participants’ academic, career, and personal needs assessments.
  • Assists with the recruitment and selection of TRIO SSS Program tutors.
  • Plans, travels with and assists with the supervision of cultural and academic activities/field trips and campus visits for TRIO SSS Program participants.
  • Provides career counseling and plans career awareness events, lectures and workshop activities.
  • Provides students with advice and assistance to encourage persistence, retention and success (graduation and/or transfer) at the graduate and professional level.
  • Provides referrals to other services when appropriate so as not to duplicate TRIO SSS Program services.
  • Develops and monitors the TRIO SSS Program advising model program.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations including traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, student personnel, or closely related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience working with educational programs or in TRIO SSS Programs.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience working in the field of counseling, higher education, career advising, or advising.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to utilize counseling techniques.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and effective student/counseling and advising documentation as required by the TRIO SSS Program regulations and the U. S. Department of Education/Office of Postsecondary Education.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Must maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and provide documentation of such.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience in educational programs at the college/university level.
  • Familiar with or from a background similar to TRIO SSS Program participants.
  • Experience working with students from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds, preferably direct TRIO SSS Program experiences.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish).

  • TRIO SSS Program Student Employees and Part-time Employees.

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to move freely around the campus and community
  • Ability to negotiate stairs
  • Ability to hear in a conversational voice at a distance of 10 feet and on the telephone
  • Ability to speak clearly
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, etc. as required to perform responsibilities.
  • Ability to drive vehicle.
  • Dexterity required to performing keyboard functions
