Organizational Overview

Upward Bound House (UBH) is dedicated to ending the cycle of intergenerational family homelessness.  We compassionately provide a continuum of services ranging from crisis housing to permanent housing and homelessness prevention.  With over 30 years of experience in family homelessness, UBH is a leading services provider, contributing to and advocating for lasting solutions to end family homelessness.  UBH strives to reduce the number of homeless families with minor children who are hungry and living on the streets of Los Angeles, by helping them access basic resources and successfully transition into their own homes with the capacity to remain there permanently.

 

Position Summary

UBH seeks a bright and highly-motivated individual to join as the Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator (VCC). The VCC will build and manage a comprehensive Volunteer Program and connect people and organizations in the broader community to UBH's programs in order to deepen our impact on homeless families. The VCC is responsible for all aspects of the Volunteer Program, including recruitment, orientation, training, engagement and recognition of volunteers. The VCC will work closely with development and program staff to assess and meet the needs of our volunteer partners and program participants. The VCC will be joining UBH at an exciting time of growth and may have the opportunity to grow into additional responsibilities. This position requires some weekend and evening hours. ** Please note this position is full-time in the office in Santa Monica and does not offer hybrid work flexibility at this time. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers to maximize positive impact on our programs.
  • Develop and implement a strategy for soliciting, engaging, and maintaining new volunteers.
  • Interview, match and schedule volunteers to opportunities that suit their skill sets, ensure they understand their responsibilities and receive proper training.
  • Review and update job descriptions for volunteer positions.
  • Conduct volunteer orientation and training workshops for specific volunteer roles.
  • Communicate and coordinate volunteer groups for specific projects.
  • Maintain volunteer database and keep records of volunteer activities, including numbers of teams, volunteers, hours worked, contact information, etc.
  • Ensure that volunteer liability waivers are signed and filed.
  • Identify leaders among the volunteers and recruit them in “Super Volunteer” tier.
  • Nurture volunteers to improve their connection to the organization.
  • Organize volunteer recognition events; monitor volunteer satisfaction through surveys etc.
  • Develop and implement formal and informal volunteer appreciation program.
  • Implement code of conduct and operating procedures to uphold the organization's values.
  • Coordinate with various departments to identify volunteer needs; coordinate donor engagement and volunteer activities with the Development Department.
  • Recognize and elevate appropriate volunteers for fund development.
  • Staff the Volunteer Committee of the Board.


Community Outreach

  • Develop outreach programming to educate members of the community about topics related to the organization’s mission.
  • Maintain relationships with local businesses and community leaders to identify opportunities for donations or partnerships.
  • Collaborate with the Program Department to identify participant needs and secure collaborative arrangements via MOUs and track implementation and impact of partnerships.
  • Manage special events such as fairs, community events for participants and stakeholders.
  • Assist in creation of outreach materials for distribution to the organization's stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with collaborative partners.
  • Secure donations for participant items identified by the Programs Department; maintain inventory of items in CRM database.
  • Develop and maintain a resource guide for staff as well as resource booklets for participants.
  • Maintain a calendar of events of participant activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Passion for the mission of Upward Bound House.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Health, Communications or related field.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience recruiting and coordinating volunteers and conducting community outreach.
  • A genuine interest in the vital role volunteers play in supporting nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, and strong attention to detail.
  • Warm, friendly and outgoing personality comfortable engaging with new people on a daily basis.
  • Strong critical thinking ability with a focus on providing solutions.
  • Builds strong rapport with staff, board members, donors and volunteers.
  • Available for occasional work on weekends and
