Job Summary:

A school custodial staff job includes a wide range of duties related to cleaning and maintenance to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the middle school facilities. Here's a detailed breakdown of typical responsibilities:

Required Qualifications:

  • Past experience in custodial work or similar service industry role.
  • Is in agreement with the Midland Christian School’s Statement of Faith and Vision.
  • The job may involve prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, lifting heavy objects, and performing repetitive tasks. Physical stamina and the ability to handle the demands of the job are essential. 
  • Ability to climb and properly operate a ladder.
  • A keen eye for detail is necessary to ensure thorough cleaning and maintenance of school facilities. Janitors must be able to spot cleanliness issues and address them promptly.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing priorities, emergencies, or special events that may require adjustments to cleaning schedules or tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with various cleaning techniques, equipment (such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and pressure washers), and cleaning chemicals is important for performing the job safely and effectively.
  • Understanding of safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries, as well as knowledge of handling and disposing of cleaning chemicals safely.
  • Custodial Staff should be capable of identifying and addressing cleaning and maintenance issues as they arise. This may involve troubleshooting equipment problems or finding solutions to unexpected challenges.

Skills:

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Organizational management skills. Ability to communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community.  Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with frequent interruptions.

Reliable transportation.                                                                                       

Physical and Mental Effort:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms and taste or smell.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, climb or balance, crouch or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Essential Functions

Essential functions of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following functions.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Cleaning:
  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and floors.
  • Emptying and sanitizing waste bins.
  • Dusting and wiping down surfaces such as desks, tables, chairs, and windowsills.
  • Cleaning windows and mirrors.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting common areas like hallways, stairways, and cafeterias.
  1. Trash Management:
  • Collecting and disposing of trash and recycling materials throughout the school premises.
  1. Maintenance:
  • Reporting any maintenance issues, such as broken fixtures, leaking pipes, or malfunctioning equipment, to the Director of Facilities.
  • Performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks as needed, such as changing light bulbs, fixing leaky faucets, or repairing broken furniture. 
  • Conduct regular inspections of school facilities to identify potential maintenance issues. 
  1. Groundskeeping:
  • Sweeping or clearing debris from sidewalks and building entrances. 
  • Landscaping an upkeep of school grounds.
  1. Assistance with Events:
  • Setting up and taking down equipment and furniture for school events, such as assemblies, professional development or community events, and sporting events. 
  • Cleaning up after events and ensuring that facilities are returned to their original condition. 
  1. Collaboration:
  • Collaborating with school staff, such as the Director of Facilities, other custodial staff, administrator, and teachers to coordinate cleaning and maintenance schedules and tasks. 
  • Communicating effectively with school staff regarding any issues or concerns related to cleaning and maintenance. 
  1. Professionalism:
  • Maintaining a professional demeanor and appearance while on duty. 
  • Providing excellent customer service to students, staff, and visitors. 
  1. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
