POSITION TITLE:
Assistant Mechanic
SUPERVISOR:

CLASSIFICATION:
Non-Exempt
PURPOSE:
The primary function of the assistant mechanic is to Work with Lead Mechanic for maintenance of all Ride Solution and contracted vehicles and equipment, as needed, including repairs and routine maintenance. The assistant mechanic will also recommend any necessary vehicle maintenance to the Lead Mechanic or designee, and coordinate professionally with external agencies, businesses, vendors, and with other DSI/Four Rivers’ personnel.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Diagnose and make minor and major repairs on vehicles and equipment, such as tune-ups, oil changes, repairing engines, transmissions, electrical and brake systems.
- Make service calls on inoperable vehicles.
- Order parts when approved by Lead Mechanic for vehicles and equipment.
- Keep tools and work area orderly and clean.
- Maintain preventive maintenance records.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Maintain general understanding of the Mission and operations of the agency and Its services and represent Four Rivers and Ride Solution and the customers we serve in a positive way.
- Comply with all Ride Solution and DSI/Four Rivers’ policies and procedures.
- Actively seek to expand and maintain professional and job-related skills by participating in training and learning opportunities made available, as well as by aggressively seeking additional means of professional growth.
- Exchange relevant information and ideas with other Ride Solution and Four Rivers’ personnel on an on-going basis, both through informal means and regularly scheduled meetings.
- Promote and safeguard health and safety in all agency activities. Interact with personnel in a professional manner with verbal exchanges and no foul language.
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and deal with and solve practical problems.
- Check vehicles on a routine basis for maintenance needs, with an emphasis on customer safety, fuel efficiency and cost reduction. Work with automotive shops and parts distributors within the counties of service to obtain best prices on repairs and parts.
- Recommend the best approaches to vehicle upkeep and efficiency to drivers.
- Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing, with consideration of the employee’s current responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB SKILLS:
- Ability to read parts manual; help to analyze, diagnose, and repair equipment failures.
- Knowledge of I.O.S.H.A. guidelines.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain an Indiana Public Operator License with a “For Hire” endorsement or a CDL license and meet requirements for the Medical Qualification. Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test and on-going

- Maintain compliance courses such as CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens. Complete other trainings such as Fire Suppression, F.T.A Drug and Alcohol Training, and HIPAA Compliance.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age; must have held a valid driver’s license for 2 years. Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- An understanding of mechanics, with knowledge of practices, procedures, materials and tools used in automotive repair.
- Must have and maintain a good driving record with no convictions of driving while intoxicated within the last five (5) years. Alcohol and drug screening under the guidelines of the Department of Transportation and the FTA.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
