Spread the Word Nevada was formed in February 2001 by Co-Founders, Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst.

Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing early childhood literacy by placing books into the homes of children within Nevada's at-risk, low-income communities. Through community collaboration, mentorship and family partnership programs, Spread the Word Nevada fosters reading and language development opportunities leading to brighter academic and economic futures for these children. We are dedicated to changing the lives of at-risk children, one book at a time.

Spread the Word Nevada has various programs that support, coordinate, and facilitate to advance childhood literacy. Programs include the Kids-to-Kids program, the Breakfast/Snack Time with Books program, the Books & Buddies program, and the Readers in Training program. Currently, the Organization's programs are being implemented, supported, and utilized in a continuously growing number of elementary schools throughout the Greater Las Vegas Valley, Washoe, and Elko Counties in Nevada.

Position Summary

The Volunteer Engagement Manager is responsible for recruiting a strong volunteer base and implementing engaging and meaningful experiences for those volunteers that create and sustain a positive culture.

Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesVolunteers
  • Leads in the recruitment, selection, placement, and onboarding of volunteers for the entire organization (includes all warehouse, program-specific, and event volunteers)
  • Coordinates and executes all aspects of the annual volunteer appreciation event
  • Develops a strong customer service and recognition program that engages, supports, and retains volunteers
  • Works collaboratively to acquire and execute large-scale "fee-for-service" volunteer events with corporate partners
  • Leads the operation of all volunteer intern programs

Outreach
  • Seeks out and attends community outreach opportunities such as events, fairs, festivals, tabling events, etc. to promote STWN and recruit volunteers
  • Meets and develops relationships with corporations and service groups to promote STWN and their volunteer needs
  • Speaks at events to promote volunteer needs of STWN
  • Recognizes potential donor opportunities through volunteer outreach and communicates those opportunities to the Development team

Administration
  • Maintains volunteer records, including descriptions of all volunteer opportunities, requirements, and trainings for each, as well as procedures and safety information
  • Tracks and monitors performance measures and goals of the department
  • Continuously researches best practices related to volunteer and corporate engagement
  • Oversees usage of volunteer database
  • Schedules all volunteer activities in the database and maintains backend functionality
  • Directly supervises the Assistant Manager, Volunteer Engagement
  • Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Director of Programs related to the fundamental aspects of the Volunteer Manager or related positions

Education and/or Experience Requirements
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in a related field and at least two to four years of volunteer administrative experience. The right combination of education and/or relevant experience may be substituted in lieu of degree requirements.
  • Prior nonprofit volunteer management preferred
  • Experience with volunteer management software preferred
General Requirements
  • Knowledge of current trends, resources, and information related to volunteerism
  • Demonstrated ability to work with, motivate, and empower people of all backgrounds
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
  • Comfortable and proficient in utilizing volunteer software
  • Exceptional public speaking and writing skills
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Nevada State Drivers' License
  • Current Nevada State Driving Record

  • Ability to Comply with the Company Drug and Alcohol Policy as a requirement of a position that could adversely affect the safety of others.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to excessive heat and wet and/or humid outside conditions. Due to working in the office, warehouse, and/or school setting, the noise level in the environment is moderate to high.
