The University of Alabama System is receiving applications for the position of University Counsel (UAB Health System). This is an on-site position based in Birmingham on the campus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Reporting directly to the UAB Chief University Counsel, who reports to the General Counsel of the University of Alabama System, the University Counsel provides legal advice and services to the UAB Health System, its hospitals and clinics, as well as its affiliates. This position works closely with, and is coordinated by, the General Counsel of the UAB Health System.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in effectively serving a diverse and demanding clientele, including officers and directors
  • Excellent legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and collaborative working relationships within the Office of Counsel and across UAB, UAB Health System, and The University of Alabama System
  • Established ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Education/Training/Experience

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama or must become so licensed within six (6) months of hire
  • Experience representing health care entities is preferred
  • A minimum of 3+ years of relevant legal experience required

Responsibilities

  • Managing administrative matters
  • Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing transactional documents
  • Providing legal advice and counsel, particularly involving contracts, regulations, and health care legal and compliance matters
  • Other duties as assigned

All eligible employees are required by state law to participate in Teachers' Retirement System. This defined benefit program provides eligible, retired employees with a specific benefit payable monthly for the lifetime of the member. The value of this monthly retirement payment generally increases with each year of service. Upon service retirement, employees are also eligible to join the state's Public Education Employee Health Insurance Plan (PEEHIP).
