Job Responsibilities and Duties:

The Program Director of Pharmacogenomics (PD-PGx) is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position that reports directly to the Chair, Department of Pharmaceutical and Graduate Life Sciences. The PD-PGx provides vision and leadership for the maintenance of the PGx programs, a distinctive faculty and preceptor team, and excellence in competency-based, graduate pharmacogenomics education.

Essential Job Functions:

These consist of four domains: administrative, teaching, service, and scholarship.

Administrative (30%)

  • Maintain policies and procedures for effectively managing all components of the PGx programs to ensure fair, equitable, and considerate treatment of prospective and enrolled students (such as program admission, retention, and completion policies).
  • Oversee student recruitment, mentorship, and evaluation;
  • Chair the PGx Council, a group of faculty and staff that work in the program and is responsible for admissions, assessment, and the curriculum of the programs;
  • Maintain program accreditation under the Higher Learning Commission (HLC);
  • In collaboration with the Department Chair:
    1. coordinate teaching responsibilities in the PGx programs;
    2. manage internal financial resources to support the goals of the PGx programs;
  • In collaboration with the Office of Experiential Education, secure, oversee, and manage experiential learning sites as needed for dual degree (PharmD/MS in PGx) students;
  • In collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs, review accreditation standards and student progression reports;
  • Establish external relationships that benefit the pharmacogenomics programs (e.g., partnerships with pharmacogenomics testing companies, pharmaceutical industries, professional organizations, etc.);
  • Provide and/or delegate responsibilities to assure year-round coverage of director responsibilities during planned and unplanned absences.

Teaching (50%) (15 load hours)

  • Develop, teach, and coordinate required courses in the pharmacogenomics programs as in the pharmacy program, as assigned;
  • Assess student competency-based learning and administer formative and summative assessments;
  • Develop and teach elective courses, as appropriate;
  • Continuously strive to incorporate and introduce timely topics and cutting-edge concepts in relevant areas;
  • Maintain office hours, as appropriate;
  • Direct and attend non-class activities (e.g., interprofessional learning experiences), as necessary.
  • Be an exemplary professional role model for students and colleagues.

Scholarship (10%)

  • Lead and participate in the scholarship of discovery, application, integration or teaching in pharmacogenomics;
  • Pursue fundable programs appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline and interests;
  • Disseminate the results of scholarly endeavors in appropriate forums, including publications, presentations, and teaching;
  • Mentor and collaborate with other scholars both inside and outside the institution, as appropriate.

Service (10%)

  • Participate in faculty governance, including attending meetings—full faculty, division, department, and committee—and fulfilling attendant responsibilities;
  • Contribute meaningfully to departmental and College developmental and planning activities, such as retreats and workshops;
  • Serve as a faculty advisory to student organizations, if applicable;
  • Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations and professional development activities.

Secondary Job functions:

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Doctor of Philosophy or terminal professional degree in pharmacy/pharmaceutical science with a focus on pharmacogenomics or related field;
  • Understanding of current pharmacogenomics education and application;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders;
  • Effective presentation skills;
  • Ability to deliver course content through various mechanisms (e.g. face-to-face, distance-learning, etc.);
  • Ability to provide effective feedback to students and administration;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and collaborators;
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and manage time;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English;
  • Basic computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and internet use;
  • Commitment to continuous self-improvement and professional development;
  • Knowledge of student learning and its assessment.
