Utility Project Manager

Utility project managers should be goal oriented. They should add value and strength to any project they direct by providing expertise and using modern methods. This position is accountable for all aspects of a project’s success, from the initial planning stages to the execution and completion of the project while exceeding our customers’ expectations. The project manager is the single point of contact who manages the deployment, execution, and closeout of a variety of utility projects. These projects include underground utility work including municipalities. This position collaborates with upper management in the planning and execution of the job.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accept responsibility for the services and activities related to the management of each project, including but not limited to design, bid, construction, and related functions.
  • Analyze and respond to project risks.
  • Coordinate staffing and operational activities.
  • Develop program budgets to fund staffing, equipment, and materials.
  • Direct and review work plans.
  • Direct the preparation of plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts for each project.
  • Ensure the completion of projects within budgetary, regulatory, and time limits.
  • Identify resource needs.
  • Meet with contractors, engineers, and developers.
  • Organize and schedule the work of professional and paraprofessional engineering staff and private contractors (monitors workflows, evaluates staff, etc.).
  • Prepare and present reports.
  • Resolve any engineering problems during the construction phase.
  • Resolve citizen questions and complaints.
  • Review the design of utility projects.
  • Select and train personnel.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of utility construction experience with a minimum of 10 years as a project manager with similar duties and responsibilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field preferred, PMP Certified Preferred.
  • Experience in project schedules, cost engineering, budgeting, forecasting costs, status reports, procurement, and negotiation with subcontractors and material vendors required.
  • Management experience in driving in-house crews and subcontractor performance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction/engineering drawings, records, route maps, scopes of work, testing/QC, and auditing projects for compliance to SOW and contractual obligations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Visio, Google Suite (including Earth), DWG drawings and computer skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of public rights of way and deployments to include maintenance of traffic (MOT).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and is expected to drive as required to assigned projects to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery.
  • ‘Safety First’ attitude and strict adherence to safety procedures.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude toward coworkers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Building and construction knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways or roads.
  • Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles in production and precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Must be able to work some weekends and evenings when needed.
  • Travel required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a non-climate-controlled environment, work in inclement weather, stand, and drive for extended periods of time.
  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable and sustained use of your arms, legs, and moving your entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, sitting standing, and handling of materials up to 75lbs.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
