Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Director of Activities, the Activities Assistant is responsible for creating and implementing an activity program as designed by the Activities Department. The Activity Assistant is also responsible for observing the overall wellbeing of the residents within the performance of their assignment. The Activities Assistant will be required to lead, assist and help create recreational activities and develop programs to preserve cognitive skills, motivation, independence and social skills for the ALF residents.

Essential Functions- Coordinates, conducts and oversees daily activities as posted and planned
- Responsible for information given and received at Activity and Resident Council and other meetings, and documentation as required
- Plans and coordinates special events as scheduled with the approval from the Supervisor
- Provides clerical support to the Supervisor as assigned
- Assists other Activities personnel as needed or requested
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions, conducts trainings and in-services as needed
- Maintains a positive and professional working relationship with other coworkers, residents, and family members
- Supervises and trains entry level activity staff and volunteers assigned to the unit
- Develops and creates Activity program calendar each month consisting of seasonal programs and new programs
- Oversees Activity program ensuring quality customer service of staff and volunteers
- Accompanies residents with other staff members on outings, as needed
- Transports residents to outings/appointments as needed according to transportation schedule
- Creates forms and flyers for recreational services as needed
- Assists with specific activity in the facility as assigned by Supervisor
- Interacts with all staff and residents in the spirit of St. John of God
- Knows and implements the Mission and Values of St. John of God Retirement & Care Center
- Be present, systematic, and responsible in referring any inquiry or problem regarding a family member, resident or visitor to the appropriate staff person
- Knows and uses accurate information, location and function of various departments, and names of appropriate supervisory personnel
- Participates in the planning of all major ALF programs or campus events
- Organizes the set-up and clean-up of recreational activities
- Maintains pool safety and area equipment
- Responsible for locking all doors to the Activity Room as directed by Supervisor
- Work with Alzheimer’s and Dementia residents
- Leads and creates activities, i.e. Yoga, Laughing Yoga, stretch class, aqua aerobics, etc.
- Creates and maintains transportation month reports
- Creates and maintains activities month to month reports
- Leads and facilitates special events
- Maintains and orders supplies for Activities, if directed by the Supervisor
- Generates all daily activity schedules
- Generates all transportation sign-up sheets
- Responsible for overseeing activities and ensuring programs are carried out according to calendar
- Responsible for making sure that activity supplies are available, equipment are in working condition and supplies and equipment are kept clean and organized
- Responsible for making sure Dietary requests are submitted
- Responsible for ordering/maintenance of Happy Hour supplies
- Responsible for ordering/maintenance of the gift shop
- Responsible for overall direction and maintaining of bulletin boards
- Responsible for ensuring monthly calendars, flyers and other notices are updated and posted in assigned areas
- Responsible for daily rounds in designated area to ensure a clean and safe environment
- Must ensure Activity areas and offices are kept neat and organized
- Assists during residents’ mealtimes as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Follows organizational and departmental procedures

Cooperates fully in all risk management activities and investigations
Physical Demands & Working Conditions- Occasionally lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying up to 35lbs
- Support the weight of a resident (90-200lbs with assistance), assisted for short movements and help
- Reaching above/below shoulder level for supplies and assistance with residents
- Frequently pushing/pulling/grasping/handling/fingering/twisting/bending/squatting required for activities
- Occasional climbing and balancing required for decorating and other activity events
- During an 8-hour work day, employee is required to walk and stand on feet majority of the day
- Must follow dress code policy
- Must follow all safety measures and procedures
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated skills in written and spoken English
- Must keep all required certificates and/or licenses current
- Activity Leadership Certification preferred
- Preferably 6 months experience working with the elderly population in Activities
- Needs to be able to lead recreational activities such as aqua aerobics, stretch class, bingo games and other programs upon assignment
- Strong sense of customer service
- Ability to present self in a cheerful and outgoing manner that will motivate others to participate in activities
- Ability to coordinate various activities during the day
