Job DescriptionJob DescriptionThe Director of Technology oversees the IT department, IT security, and other technical operations at SUN. This position is responsible for identifying the organization’s IT needs, adding updates and enhancements to current systems, and ensuring employees’ technical issues are resolved efficiently. The Director will develop tools and systems, oversee IT infrastructure and training, and ensure departments have the information and resources they need to optimize network engagement, advance solar policies, and facilitate solar adoption. This position will ensure we can analyze data to make strategic decisions that assist us in achieving our mission, and will work closely with our managed service provider for help desk, project, and strategic support.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated history of both hands-on, technical and broad, general management experience. They will need the ability to zoom in and laser focus on technical tasks as well as to zoom out and think strategically.

Responsibilities
Job responsibilities include:

Team Management and Administration
  • Manage a Business Systems Administrator, who will work closely with the Director to execute key department initiatives and tasks
  • Identify and establish team processes and infrastructure for better communication, coordination, and knowledge retention
  • Oversee departmental functions, including resource allocation, budget planning, and project timelines
  • Oversee and manage staff and contractors within the IT department, including a hands-on managed service provider
IT Management
  • Lead development and implementation processes for SUN’s IT systems and department
  • Understand our IT needs and identify gaps now and in the future
  • Research and recommend the best approaches to fill identified gaps and needs and proactively address issues before they become problems
  • Lay out a roadmap for achieving this vision, including articulating departmental needs and future decision points
  • Oversee and manage ongoing IT systems improvements – coordinating contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure on-time delivery
  • Translate high-level work plans and converts to detailed assignments for project members
  • Ensure staff receive excellent and empathetic training and technical support, using a combination of Windows and Mac computers. Facilitate positive, seamless staff interface with technology platforms whenever possible including Salesforce, Slack, Asana, Dropbox, Certify, Canto, and others
  • Ensure staff receive outstanding technical support from the IT department. As issues arise, ensure problems are quickly assessed and resolved
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop new products and processes that accelerate our work and increase our impact
  • Work with staff to understand their database needs and to identify improvements and additions to our systems that will increase SUN’s capabilities
  • Manage ongoing deployment of systems improvements
  • Translate new business needs into long-term architecture solutions
Security and Compliance Oversight
  • Maintain, develop, and implement policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of SUN’s IT systems
  • Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive security strategies to protect data and IT infrastructure from cyber threats
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments to ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of security measures and compliance protocols
  • Work with SUN’s managed service provider to ensure day-to-day security of our systems, including system access administration Ensure they perform all procedures necessary to ensure the safety of information systems assets and to protect systems from intentional or inadvertent access or destruction
  • Ensure staff understand and adhere to necessary procedures to maintain security
Data Strategy and Management
  • Ensure effective and consistent data capture and tracking across the organization. Maintain up-to-date documentation of the system and provide training for new staff on how to access and manipulate information relevant to their work
  • Ensure SUN follows industry best practices for data privacy and institutional security
  • Automate and streamline the processes that our team uses to launch and support solar co-ops, volunteer initiatives, events, advocacy, and other activities across the country
  • Establish and enforce data governance policies to maintain data quality, integrity, and security
  • Identify data reporting needs in support of operational and decision-making across organizational units
  • Ensure we are able to analyze and identify trends in our data that can help us be more effective solar educators and advocates
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing technology and teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving, trouble-shooting, and critical thinking skills
  • Research and analysis skills
  • Ability to collaborate, network, and build working relationships
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Salesforce, EveryAction, Zapier, WordPress, Google Admin, and Slack
  • Spanish fluency
