The Role:

The Program Assistant provides instructional support to students in the classroom, apartment and community settings (e.g. worksites, etc.).The Program Assistant will cover & teach classes as needed. The Program Staff will Implement REACH Life Skills curriculum (e.g., meal preparation, budgeting, grocery shopping, laundry, personal hygiene, apartment maintenance, etc.)


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Must be self-motivated, team-oriented, and committed to teaching every individual through creative, innovative and meaningful instruction.
  • Maintain a cooperative attitude of working together with the teacher(s), volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing educational strategies and activities.
  • Become familiar with the REACH program curriculum, assessments (e.g., Expectations for Independence), daily/weekly schedules, methods for recording attendance, and all other daily duties of the REACH Program staff.
  • Provide one-to-one assistance to students in the apartment and community settings.
  • Teach problem solving and relationship building skills, instruct residents regarding appropriate social behaviors.
  • Attend all required meetings, including but not limited to departmental and agency staff.
  • Complete required assessments and checklists as directed.
  • Administer medication as needed.
  • Provide transportation of residents/students as needed. Use of own vehicle may be required
  • Attends all training and professional development opportunities as required by and/or provided by Chapel Haven Schleifer Center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by REACH Administrative Manager, Residential Manager, REACH Program Director

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education is preferred or minimum of 2 years previous experience working with adults with cognitive disabilities and/or special needs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Previous experience working with adults with cognitive disabilities and/or special needs.
  • Ability to take direction and work within a team.
  • Ability to affect and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, staff and the general public.
  • Cultural sensitivity and proven ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Excellent oral and written skills. Computer literacy.
  • Can work independently and as a team member.
  • Able to adapt to the flexible nature of the position.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Maintain a positive work attitude.
  • Excellent effective judgement, decision-making and communication skills.
  • Obtain/maintain in-service requirements as mandated by Chapel Haven Schleifer Center
  • Valid CT driver’s license
