Job Summary: Provides direct legal services to clients and, under Director’s supervision, manages daily operations of legal clinic.

Minimum Salary: At least $80,000 Annually

Communication: Good oral and written communication skills are required for this position. The person in this position must be able to communicate effectively with the clients, staff, and others; and contribute to a positive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

● Under the direction of the Legal and Public Policy Director, the Supervising Attorney has primary responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the legal clinic. As assigned by and under the direction of the Director, the supervising attorney may supervise or assist with supervising clinic advocates and legal services staff.

● Supervising attorney has primary responsibility, under the direction of the Director, for ensuring that clinical and other credit-bearing internship work completed in the legal clinic satisfies the academic requirements set by the partner universities.

● Researches or supervises research on novel legal issues that may arise before or during client representation and for public policy or other advocacy. Assists the Director in identifying trends in Mazzoni Center’s cases and intake inquiries, or elsewhere, to identify systemic issues suitable for advocacy using strategies such as impact litigation, amicus submissions, or public policy advocacy.

● Maintains a full caseload and manages the activities involved with direct legal representation and advocacy. Litigation strategy, caseload focus, and all other litigation decisions will be made by or with the approval of the Legal Director.

● As directed and assigned by the Director, represents Mazzoni Center at public speaking engagements and other outreach events.

● Performs other job-related duties as required and as directed.

Education, Training, License and Certification, Skills and Experience:

● Law degree from accredited law school.

● Member in good standing of Pennsylvania Bar.

● 3 years or more of supervisory or managerial experience or comparable experience.

● Strong oral and written communication skills.

● Strong research skills.

● Ability to address conflicts with tact and diplomacy, and prioritize work with minimal supervision.

● Ability to maintain client confidentiality.

● Ability to operate computers, telephones, and related office machinery.

● Ability to exchange information accurately with clients, interns, and staff.

Supervises: Legal Services Office Administrator, other staff as assigned

Clearances:

1. Background checks are required, including Criminal Background Clearance, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance.

Physical Requirements:

1. Must occasionally move about the office to access files and storage, and other office equipment.

2. Requires regular travel to courthouses and locations of public speaking events.

3. The ability to sit for extended periods of time

4. The ability to lift objects of up to 10 pounds

5. The ability to communicate using written and spoken words

6. Close visual acuity, with or without correction, to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing court submissions and response; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading

7. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

8. Must have all necessary vaccinations in accordance with organization policy.
