Job Title: Litigation Attorney

Job Summary:

FIRE Services is seeking a highly skilled Litigation Attorney to join our team. As a Litigation Attorney, you will be responsible for engaging in strategic litigation on First Amendment issues to bring about real-world impact. You will work collaboratively with our team to defend free speech and free thought, and advocate outside the courtroom through media appearances, writing, and public-speaking engagements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze cases for litigation potential and develop cases.
  • Research and draft demand letters, pleadings, discovery requests and responses, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Direct discovery strategy, including drafting and reviewing documents received in response to discovery and public-records requests.
  • Take and defend depositions.
  • Argue motions in court and participate in hearings, trials, and other proceedings.
  • Supervise and mentor staff attorneys and litigation fellows.
  • Handle media appearances, take public-speaking engagements, and educate the public on FIRE's litigation efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge and passion for FIRE's mission and an ability to articulate that passion in a way that will make others enthusiastic about our cause.
  • Have 6-10 years of civil-litigation experience.
  • Have exceptional legal research, critical thinking, and writing skills.
  • Have strong communication skills, including the ability to explain legal concepts to students and non-attorneys.
  • Have excellent organizational and case-management skills, including meticulous attention to detail.
  • Have expertise in the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Evidence.
  • Have exemplary planning skills, including an ability to handle dynamic and challenging situations.
  • Have a strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to work productively across disciplines and with people of differing views.
  • Have a desire to pursue a career in public-interest litigation.

Requirements:

  • Graduated from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Member of the bar of the jurisdiction in which they are based.
