The Residential Director provides leadership and administrative oversight for the residence life program, as well as supervision of the department staff. The Director will provide front line administrative oversight for daily residential operations. The Residential Director will be responsible for the mentorship and direct oversight of all Residential Supervisors and Operations Managers. Through their oversight and leadership, the Director will drive the residential environment and culture that is therapeutic, trauma-informed, nurturing, and prioritizes safety. The Director will also manage additional operational tasks including coordinating emergency response procedures, and implementation of recruitment and retention efforts. The Director is responsible for ensuring that residence halls are staffed 24/7/365 including overnight hours, breaks and holidays.

The Director will closely collaborate with all levels of staff from all student-facing departments,
including Activities and Recreation, Health and Wellness, Education and Clinical to develop systems that support students living on-campus. As a member of the leadership team the Residential Director will also be an essential part of strengthening school culture and staff engagement and morale.
 
Having access to confidential information regarding Shrub Oak and its students, discretion and independent judgement is required.

Essential Functions – Primary duties of the positionRolesPrimary duties
  1. Lead and supervise systems for residential living at Shrub Oak International School.
-Create systems of operation for residential living for a growing school.

-Implement an operational inventory process for residential facilities to include furniture and equipment inventories in collaboration with the Head of Building and Grounds Maintenance.
-Coordinate changes as needed to improve operations and the student experience.
-Develop and implement annual goals for the department
-Design and update all department and division materials, including but not limited to, training manuals, student handbook, emergency response protocols.
-Assist with the development, implementation, and oversight of the annual budget in collaboration with the Head of Programs.
 
  1. Develop and oversee structures for staff supervision, training and development
- Create and implement a supervisory structure that prioritizes regular supervision for all residential staff
-Work collaboratively with Director of Research to ensure staff are comprehensively trained to provide therapeutic, trauma informed, person-centered care.
-In collaboration with the Head of Program, responsible for the creation of, and adherence to, processes for monitoring and documenting employee progress, development and performance, and implementing employee disciplinary action if necessary.
  1. Member of transdisciplinary leadership team.
-Closely collaborate with transdisciplinary leadership team to ensure alignment of policies and procedures among staff.

-Create structures to ensure student data is captured in transdisciplinary meetings.

-Collaborate and create structures to implement student’s individual program.

-Attend and participate in regular staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Resolve escalated customer service issues with families and referral sources in a professional manner.

Preferred Education and Experience (i.e. certifications)
  • Master's Degree in Education, Organizational Leadership, Counseling or related degree
  • A minimum of 3 years of housing experience including the ability to successfully work with students and student conduct.
  • A minimum of 3 years related work experience in an education setting with students with ASD, special needs and/or other developmental disabilities preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years professional experience and specifically demonstrated progressive experience in hiring, leading and developing staff. 
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently with little supervision.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies on a twenty-four-hour basis.
Supervisory Responsibility –individual contributor
Supervise the Campus Life Managers, Supervisors and Coordinators. The number of direct reports will vary as the student population grows.

What are the nature and scope of independent decisions made in this position?
They must be able to make reasonable determinations and judgments, to handle the day-to-day aspects of the role; They will be required to make valued, informed assessments and recommendations

Work Environment
Work a flexible schedule which may not necessarily be limited to traditional "office hours" and appropriately respond to emergency situations as needed in accordance with Shrub Oak policies, procedures and protocols.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Physical demands are in excess of sitting, and require walking or standing to a significant degree. The Director of Residence Life is required to move throughout the campus on a routine basis and execute program operations.
  • Daily desk work including extensive amounts of computer and phone time as well as the ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds, and the ability to rearrange furniture for events is occasionally required
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Hours will span over 4 weekdays and one weekend. However, the demanding nature of our profession will regularly require professional employees to work longer hours than regular hours of operation. You will be required to be available after hours on a non-regular basis during off-hours to support the leadership in critical tasks and cover various shift changes if necessary.

Salary: $125,000 to $165,000/yr
