What are we looking for?
Reporting to the Director of Health & Wellness, the Nursing Supervisor is a year-round position, serving as an integral part of Health & Wellness leadership. This position is a critical role in the oversight of daily operations within Health & Wellness. The role will involve a team of nursing direct reports (RN’s and/or LPN’s) as appointed by the Director.  The Supervisor will employ an evidence-based, student-centric approach to providing high-quality, proactive direct and indirect nursing, medical, and overall proactive wellness care to our students.  They will also intermittently provide direct nursing care including guiding and mentoring students, assisting with emergency response procedures, and collaborating with all members of the Shrub Oak staff. The Nursing Supervisor builds trusting relationships with students, families, community members, and other medical service providers, while representing Shrub Oak International School in a respectful, competent manner. 

Essential Functions – Primary Responsibilities of the Position 

  • Direct oversight and supervision of a team of RN and/or LPN staff 

  • Collaborate with Director of Health and Wellness to develop and implement new policy and procedures as necessary 

  • Oversee maintenance and utilization of Standard of Care documents  

  • Develop and deliver staff training around department policies, procedures, and best-practices 

  • Monitor medical documentation/charting to ensure completeness, accuracy, and follow-up  

  • Support completion of new employee orientation and review and understanding of all relevant standards  

  • Assist Director with annual employee performance reviews and improvement plans as needed  

  • Assist medical case manager with medication inventory and improvement of inventory process 

  • Communicate with pharmacy as needed  

  • Assist Director with employee scheduling  

  • Establish monthly schedule and ensure staffing needs are met   

  • Supervisor may fill in/flex hours to meet staffing needs/orient with new nurses  

  • Monitor department compliance with existing processes and standards of care, and address concerns as identified 

  • Development of additional processes, sign-off procedures as needed 

  • Develop and deliver trainings and education to broader Shrub Oak Staff    

  • Attend pre-shift meetings for campus life & education monthly as needed  

  • Ensure nursing staff maintain competency in all required skills and content areas  

  • Utilize teach back/demonstration of proficiency as needed 

  • Monitor and ensure nursing staff credentials are up to date  

  • Oversight of inventory, regular checks, and ordering of medical supplies, tests and medical equipment 

  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team of providers including psychiatric, clinical, education, and direct-care providers 

  • Attend Trans-Disciplinary Team Meetings and other meetings as required 

  • Collaborate with Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner around holistic health of students and intersection of physical and psychiatric/emotional well being 

  • Provide crisis response and first-aid for medical emergencies or student injuries, including collaboration with Emergency Medical Services as needed 

  • Supervisor will intermittently provide nursing shift coverage within their license and perform all duties of that position accordingly.

Minimum Experience & Qualifications 

  • Current NYS Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in good professional standing 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an RN or LPN working with children/adolescents 
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience to develop, engage, and lead a team of medical/ nursing staff    
  • Experience in an educational or psychiatric setting preferred 
  • Experience working with youth with autism and/or psychiatric illness preferred 

Competencies 

  • Well-honed nursing/ medical assessment skills and ability to assess and respond quickly in emergent situations 
  • Exceptional communication (oral and written) and active listening skills to appropriately understand and meet student needs, as well as to interact with faculty, staff, families, and all external constituencies 
  • Expertise to make recommendations for the design of medical/ wellness programming to meet the evolving needs of program and students   
  • Excellent analytical capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to understand, problem solve, and make sound determinations/decisions in situations with complex facts and data   
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders while being sensitive and responsive to the diverse needs of students, families, faculty, and staff, with a high degree of cultural competency and collegiality   
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals effectively and proactively, in a manner that values diversity, and positively portrays our programs, personnel, and philosophies   
  • Ability to adapt and remain flexible while leading, developing, and mentoring others 
  • Ability to multitask and make sound and appropriate decisions under pressure, where situations/circumstances are continually evolving   

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Full-Time/ 40-hr position with some on-call responsibility  

Pay: $110000 to 130000 + Competitive Benefits 
Supervisory Responsibility – Yes 
 

What is the nature and scope of independent decisions made in this position?  

They must be able to make reasonable assessments and decisions, to handle the day-to-day aspects of the role; they will be required to make valued, informed assessments and recommendations, and consult for guidance as appropriate  

Work Environment  

The work will generally be performed in a school/residential environment.  

Physical Demands  

Physical demands are in excess of sitting and require walking or standing to a significant degree. The Nursing Supervisor is required to move throughout the campus on a routine basis and execute program operations. Daily desk work including extensive amounts of computer and phone time as well as the ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds, and the ability to rearrange furniture for events is occasionally required.

Valid driver’s license preferred.
