Job Description

The Food & Nutrition Specialist promotes nutritional health within MOBC’s Food Security program. The goal of the Food Security program is to empower families and individuals, many of whom live in “food deserts,” by providing healthy food, nutrition education, and emergency assistance as an integrated part of family resources provided by the center.

The Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty, to transform their lives through work, education, employment, and fellowship. The Center cannot service the community alone, so we partner with organizations like AmeriCorps, to fulfill our mission.

AmeriCorps members serve 1700 hours over the course of 11 months with Martha O'Bryan Center, gaining hands-on experience working with families, youth, and community members. The crucial components of the MOBC—AmeriCorps years of service program allow you to build your community and professional skills, thereby propelling you towards the next steps in your career and life.

Hours: 8 am – 4:30 pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Encourage nutritional health in the food pantry by creating recipes, providing nutrition education, and incorporating a community garden

  • Collaborate with other AmeriCorps members at MOBC to promote healthy eating and nutrition through twice-monthly cooking classes

  • Provide food pantry patrons with nutritional guidelines and tips for healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices

  • Work with food security partners (Second Harvest, Nashville Food Project, Aramark, etc) to promote nutrition/healthy living

  • Assist the Food Security Coordinator with operating the food pantry, which includes stocking, assisting food pantry guests, and building relationships with food pantry guests

  • Conduct site visits to other emergency food banks in Nashville to understand processes and increase efficiency at MOBC’s food pantry

  • Serve the public in a professional and courteous manner

  • Participate in AmeriCorps professional development and community-building workshops
