Job Description

The Food Security Specialist aims to expand the depth of services offered by MOBC’s Food Security program through community engagement. The goal of the Food Security program is to empower healthy families and individuals, many of whom live in “food deserts,” by providing healthy food, nutrition education, and emergency assistance as an integrated part of family resources provided by the center.

The Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty, to transform their lives through work, education, employment, and fellowship. The Center cannot service the community alone, so we partner with organizations like AmeriCorps, to fulfill our mission.

AmeriCorps members serve 1700 hours over the course of 11 months with Martha O'Bryan Center, gaining hands-on experience working with families, youth, and community members. The crucial components of the MOBC—AmeriCorps years of service program allow you to build your community and professional skills, thereby propelling you towards the next steps in your career and life.

Hours: 8 am – 4:30 pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop partnerships with local farms, grocery stores, and community-based nonprofits to increase the capacity of the Food Security program

  • Provide referrals to food pantry guests for additional support services and community resources

  • Assist the Food Security Coordinator with operating the food pantry, which includes stocking, building relationships with Food Bank patrons, and volunteer engagement

  • Conduct site visits to other emergency food banks in Nashville to understand processes and increase efficiency at MOBC’s food pantry

  • Serve the public in a professional and courteous manner

  • Participate in AmeriCorps professional development and community-building workshops
