What We Want for a Referral Coordinator:

EMT-P certification or Diploma, associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing or a BS in a medically related field with a passion for saving or changing a life.

Some of the requirements for the Referral Coordinator role include:

  • At least three years’ experience in a critical care/trauma, surgical or comparable clinical environment working in the capacity of Registered Nurse or six years as a Paramedic is required.
  • Certification in ACLS or PALS or as an EMT-P required.
  • Highly skilled, self-motivated individuals who are committed to join our challenging field by helping to save lives through organ and tissue donation.
  • Strong both clinically and compassionately competent, who understand the sensitivity, yet clinical urgency of the Organ Transplant program.
  • Ability to evaluate and coordinate organ and tissue referrals
  • Capability to discuss donation options with family members and obtain consent
  • Possess a reliable vehicle that can handle adverse weather conditions

The Referral Coordinator will ensure timely on-site response, assessment, and evaluation of potential organ donors, as well as interacting with the hospital staff to set-up the family approach process.

Some of what you’ll be doing as a Referral Coordinator:

  • Rotates 48-hour and 72-hour call, during which time you must respond to the referral of potential organ donors from hospitals by reporting for duty at specified hospitals located within the GLDP service area.
  • Evaluates potential organ donors in conjunction with AOC (Administrator on Call) based on current and past medical and social history.
  • Evaluate for donor designation, hemodilution and ABO confirmation.
  • In consultation with the AOC and following established guidelines and protocols, may make medical management recommendations to the medical and nursing staff of potential organ donors to maintain adequate organ perfusion and oxygenation.
  • Assess with the medical staff the care plan, neurological & hemodynamic status, and family communication plan.
  • Must be able to drive in adverse weather conditions.
  • Review all assessments with the AOC and requests labs per Gift of Life and hospital protocol.
  • Request appropriate medical interventions with the guidance of the AOC.
  • Obtain appropriate blood specimens for serological and HLA testing and ME evaluation. Communicate with outside agencies to facilitate laboratory testing.
  • May coordinate Operating Room recoveries.
  • Occasionally speak with potential donor families and obtain authorization and medical/social history.
