Surgical First Assistant and Tissue Recovery Expert

Position Overview

Summary:

As a Surgical First Assistant and Tissue Recovery Specialist, you will collaborate with our transplant surgeons to facilitate the recovery of organs for transplantation and ensure their safe transport to designated hospitals. In addition to your primary responsibilities, you will receive cross-training in various roles within the department, including but not limited to the pulsatile preservation of kidneys, tissue recovery, and organ preservation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of operating room protocols, infection prevention, and appropriate surgical attire.
  • Anticipate the needs of our organ recovery transplant surgeons and work closely with them.
  • Perform clamping, suturing, tying, ligating, and cutting of tissue as directed by surgeons.
  • Handle the recovery and packaging of heart valves and research organs.
  • Act as a pulsatile perfusionist, tissue recovery specialist, or organ preservation technician as required.
  • Reside within a reasonable commuting distance to our office.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills to foster teamwork and collaboration with colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in an operating room as a first assistant is essential.
  • Surgical 1st Assist Certification is preferred.
  • Completion of surgical technologist first assistant training is required.
  • Able to maintain a flexible schedule, including on-call shifts that align with our recovery surgeons' schedules.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and be insurable, with the ability to obtain a valid U.S. passport or travel documentation.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the United States or Canada as necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift weights between 50-70 pounds to assist with supplies and patient positioning.
  • Must remain alert and capable of working for 18-24 consecutive hours.
  • Ability to drive in challenging weather conditions.
  • Willingness to travel to any hospital within the service area, which may include air travel via helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.

Work Schedule:

  • Must be prepared to work 18-24 consecutive hours, fulfill on-call duties during weekdays, weekends, and holidays, and actively participate in case reviews, continuing education, and mandatory staff meetings.
