A little about Western Lake Superior Sanitary District

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is committed to preventing pollution and protecting the environment, including the region's most precious resource - Lake Superior. WLSSD treats all municipal and industrial sewage in the Duluth-Cloquet area. Founded as a special purpose unit of government created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1971 to address serious environmental pollution problems in the lower St. Louis River Basin, WLSSD provides wastewater and solid waste services and oversight for a 530 square mile region around Duluth, Minnesota.

Your day as a Director of Operations and Maintenance

The Director of Operations and Maintenance at Western Lake Superior Sanitary District holds a pivotal role in overseeing the comprehensive management of the operations and maintenance departments. This executive position plays a critical part in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the wastewater plant, biosolids program, and conveyance system. As a key member of the District Executive Team, the Director is entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the seamless functioning of the entire wastewater collection and treatment systems, as well as the land application program. Through strategic leadership and meticulous planning, this role spearheads the fulfillment of both short and long-term environmental and economic objectives within the designated areas.

To excel as the Director of Operations and Maintenance at Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, candidates must possess a diverse skill set. Essential skills include a strong technical acumen in operational and maintenance best practices, coupled with proficient asset management capabilities.

Effective team leadership, change management skills, strong communication skills and the capacity to engage and inspire staff in District initiatives are paramount. Proficiency in adhering to industry standards, operational schedules, and regulatory compliance is essential. The ability to lead a team of operations and maintenance managers through mentorship, performance management and engagement is key in this role.

Ideally, candidates will have a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or engineering and eight (8) years' experience working in utilities, water/wastewater, maintenance or operations in an industrial setting. Experience managing people is a plus. A Class "A" Wastwater Treatment Facility Operator Certificate and/or a Professional Engineers License are desirable.

An offer of WLSSD however, is conditioned on the prospective employee testing negative for drugs and alcohol.
