Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY:
Coordinates the daily operation of the Central Sterile Department to include but not be limited to the decontamination and sterile processing functions, quality assurance, and inventory maintenance. The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position. Duties may be deleted, and additional duties may be assigned at the Manager’s discretion.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Makes daily assignment and ensures that there is adequate staffing to meet the requirements for proper functioning of the department.
- Monitors the performance and productivity of the staff. Informs manager of employee counseling needs and provides input for employee evaluations.
- Understands the functions and is able to operate all of the equipment used in decontamination and sterile processing. Ensures that problems are promptly reported to the appropriate person.
- Responsible for seeing that inventories of supplies and instruments are done on schedule.
- Responsible for providing direction and assistance to the staff in all aspects of sterile processing. Ensures that training of new staff members is accomplished and documented.
- Performs quality assurance functions by reviewing sterile processing documentation and collecting data for QA reports.
- Performs technician duties as required to meet staffing needs and to provide hands on training for employees.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the department in the absence of the manager.
- Assists Manager with continuing educational programs and all special projects as required.
- Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Utilizes appropriate customer relations skills when interacting with patients, families, visitors, hospital staff, etc. to ensure all customers are treated with respect and dignity.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, with certification as Central Sterile Technician required.
- Five (5) years experience in a Central Sterile Supply Technician position.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have the ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of patients and employees and the confidentiality of all hospital and departmental documents.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports to: Central Service Manager
- General: No direct supervision; requires a complete “self-starter”; carries out activities, determines policies and methods necessary to obtain desired results; originality and initiative needed to develop programs in departmental and staff areas.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Standing and walking most of the time on duty. Lifting over 25 lbs.of instrument trays, equipment and supplies, Pushing and pulling of carts. Reaching, handling and fingering of instruments and supplies. Talking and hearing to converse with staff members and requesting personnel. Hearing to differentiate sounds of various equipment alarms. Near visual acuity for accurate reading of count sheets and instrument inspection.
