Position Reports to: Director of Community Outreach
FLSA Status: Exempt
Purpose of Position: Oversee the volunteer services program of the Society; responsible for the recruitment and management of volunteers and community service volunteers.
Responsibilities:
This position description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. Employees are required to follow any other job related duties assigned by their supervisor. This document does not create an employment contract implied or otherwise, other than an “at-will” relationship. We reserve the right to change its contents at any time.
- Manage volunteer services programs and initiatives
- Design and administer strategies to attract, recruit and retain volunteers for the Society
- Serve as a spokesperson or representative at various community/industry functions on behalf of the Society and the volunteer services program
- Provide training for employees and managers to ensure cooperation and teamwork with Society volunteers
- Oversee the volunteer recruitment and assessment process
- Coordinate the placement of volunteers throughout the Society
- Collaborate with managers to assess the number of volunteers needed, accuracy of volunteer assignment descriptions, training status, and feedback on currently assigned volunteers
- Meet with volunteers to assess overall satisfaction
- Provide ongoing feedback to volunteers on work performed
- Communicate with managers on volunteer issues, concerns or status
- Oversee the placement of community service, school and miscellaneous volunteers
- Manage and resolve volunteer issues and performance
- Ensure volunteer hours are accurate and timely
- Generate reports and statistics on volunteer programs
- Oversee the prospective volunteer orientation
- Update orientation materials as necessary
- Oversee volunteer training; review training evaluations and initiate improvements as needed
- Coach department managers on volunteer interactions
- Oversee the planning, budgeting, location and execution of annual formal volunteer recognition event
- Design and implement on-going recognition methods for volunteers
- Produce weekly newsletter for volunteers
- Meet with managers and supervisors to assess volunteer productivity in departments
- Compile monthly and rear-end reports providing statistics on voluntary activity
- Oversee input of volunteer hours and reporting
- Prepare and manage the annual budget for volunteer service program

Conditions of Employment
- Conditions of employment include working under adverse conditions such as inclement weather and noise with daily exposure to infectious diseases, parasites, and animal waste in a physically and emotionally demanding environment.
Position Qualifications: Education, Certification and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Required
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Experience supervising volunteers in a large non-profit environment
- Effective planning and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
- Minimum one-year experience and database management
Desired
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, communication, non-profit management, human resources, human services or related fields
- Three years’ experience managing 300+ volunteers in an animal welfare or other not-for-profit environment
- Blackbaud Raises Edge database experience
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements
Performs work primarily in an office setting. Potentially prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motion. May work in an area with nigh noise level. Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander and feces. Occasional lifting with reasonable accommodations.
