Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Shelter Medical Technician team's daily routines and day-to-day operations.
    • Lead team with integrity, authority, fairness, and open-mindedness. Perform as a role model and leader for the team and actively works to maintain high team morale while fostering individual growth and development.
    • Ensure shelter medical teams perform at the highest level while adhering to standard operating procedures.
    • Participate the hiring of new shelter medical staff and oversee training of tech staff in daily operations.
    • Mentor and coach employees, perform staff evaluations, issue disciplinary actions, and maintain up-to-date records in ADP on employee performance and professional development in collaboration with Medical Manager and Human Resources.
    • Create schedules for the Shelter Medical Tech team and monitor time card activity in ADP.
    • Oversee and seek to improve the financial health of the team including new revenue ideas, payroll, purchasing, and veterinary services, and auditing transactions.
    • Maintain weekly cleaning protocols and biosecurity measures.
  • Performs all duties associated with shelter medical technicians and veterinary treatment, ensuring high ­quality medical care for all animals under care.
    • Assist and set up diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures.
    • Assist with vaccinations and other injections, administer appropriate tests, medical care, and medication.
    • Perform euthanasia under the guidance of a veterinarian and document all controlled drugs in appropriate records. Ensure best practices are being used.
  • Participates in daily rounds with the Medical Manager or other designated staff.
  • Monitors the shelter for signs of disease and assumes responsibility for disease management.
  • Order, track, distribute and maintain medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals.
  • Anticipates need for and/or facilitates transfer to other St. Hubert's locations/outside agencies for medical or surgical care.
  • Act as a liaison between other departments in the shelter to ensure standards of care are met and all daily tasks assigned are completed.
  • Collaborate and communicate with Veterinarians and staff on medical assessments and decisions.
  • Maintain and apply current knowledge of shelter and veterinary medicine, emergency drugs, and protocols, as needed.
  • Represent the medical team in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Provide quality care and customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.
  • Promote humane attitudes towards the care and treatment of animals through education and example.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Knowledge of and ability to lead veterinary medical and surgical procedures and processes.
  • Knowledge of shelter medicine and variance in public vs shelter protocols and treatments.
  • Ability to effectively organize, lead, and manage staff and their work.
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures. Ability to be flexible, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize.
  • A team-oriented and collaborative approach to work, with an ability to bring out the best in peers.
  • Ability to think strategically and solve problems creatively.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer service orientation. Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and professionally with a variety of individuals representing the public, board members, volunteers, donors, and employees.

  • Computer literacy with proficient use of programs including Microsoft Office programs, email, Internet, and database management software.
  • Ability to manage the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment in a positiveprofessional manner.
  • Passion for St. Hubert's mission, and for caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament, or species, and supporting and educating members of the public, free of judgment or bias.
  • Ability to work weeknights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50+ pounds assisted.
  • Ability to be comfortable working with cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish, and wildlife.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including but not limited to lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, and bending.
  • Due to the nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; common allergens; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Veterinarian Technician preferred
  • Minimum of three years working as a progressively responsible veterinary technician. Experience will ideally include supervising staff.
  • Animal shelter experience preferred.
