Role: Snow Safety Supervisor/Forecast

Status: Full-Time, Seasonal, Hourly

Reporting To: Snow Safety Director


Powder Mountain is seeking a Snow Safety Supervisor/Forecaster that will collaborate with cross-functioning teams assisting in all aspects of the avalanche forecasting, rescue, and hazard reduction programs.


The Snow Safety Supervisor/Forecaster will be a member of a team who will have dual responsibilities to the Patrol and

Snow Safety Programs and is expected to create a positive work environment and build a strong team through effective training and leadership. As a member of the management team, the Snow Safety Supervisor/Forecaster will be expected to communicate to the snow safety department, patrol department, and

other operational teams to help develop and fulfill resort goals and objectives.


Role Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Snow Safety Director with operational and departmental needs.
  • Demonstrates strong decision-making skills in hazardous high consequence situations.
  • Proficient in the collection and interpretation of weather and snowpack data to produce operational hazard forms.
  • Assists in the production of the morning and afternoon operational Avalanche Hazard and Risk Assessment that includes primary and secondary terrain, SR 158, DMI, Davenport and Wolf Canyon.
  • Assists in the maintenance of on-mountain weather stations and snow study plots.
  • Assists in the collection of snow, weather, and avalanche observations.
  • Assists in the management of explosives inventory.
  • Assists in the organizing of mitigation efforts for the resort and state highway when needed.
  • Assists in the maintenance of avalanche sign lines and access gates including SR 158.
  • Assists Explosive Cache Manager, Build Team, Lead, Assistant, and Apprentice Blasters.
  • Ability to be fluid in an ever-changing environment.... allocating resources, changing of plans, aiding other operation department’s needs.
  • Provide emergency first aid response, evacuation and transportation to guests and employees at Powder Mountain.
  • Customer service– present an image of courtesy, efficiency and competence. Provide friendly assistance and advice to guests.
  • Handle situations involving emergencies, violations or crowd control in a calm and professional manner.
  • Training and mentoring– Assist in the training of new patrollers and snow safety technicians in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism, recognize areas of improvement, and takes appropriate actions to implement improvement.
  • Creates positive work environment through attitudes, willingness to learn, teamwork, encouragement and collaboration.

Job Performance Expectations


  • 5 years of job specific work experience, including patrolling at a professional level and decision making in avalanche terrain, with demonstrated competence and progression of increasing responsibility.
  • Met qualification for Lead Blaster.
  • Valid OEC or higher certification.
  • Holds a current American Avalanche Association Accredited Pro 2 certification.
  • Holds a current ATF Possessor Clearance Document. (Can be obtained after hiring)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the methods of explosive storage and inventory, handling, assembling, deployment, and the regulations governing their usage.
  • Weather & avalanche forecasting experience with an emphasis on patterns and conditions that directly affect the resort and its periphery terrain through past work experience and basic weather forecasting courses.
  • Prepared to present AM and PM Risk Assessments to the Snow Safety team as well as Patrol on scheduled
  • mornings.
  • Knowledge of terrain and avalanche paths encompassed in the resort and periphery and the terrain the impact.
  • Proven ability to motivate and lead employees and drive engagement.
  • Commitment to the success of individual employees, the department and the resort as a whole.
  • Effective speaking and, listening skills.
  • Ability to deal with unusual stress from high business volumes, deadlines, continual work with public, winter
  • conditions, overnight requirements and commuting to/from the resort.
  • Knowledge and the ability to show proficiency with computer skills such as utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel,
  • Information Exchange, Airflare, email and 1Risk.
  • Willing to work weekends, holidays and days off as needed.
  • Adheres to the pre-discussed schedule to meet operational needs.
  • Assists in the attendance of daily meetings if scheduled to do so.
  • Understands and follows all resort policies and procedures.
  • Understands all other operational department’s needs, and who to contact when needed.
  • Has a proper vehicle or other transportation method to the resort for scheduled shifts
