Job DescriptionJob Description

AWLA is seeking a motivated Community Outreach Intern to support AWLA’s Community Programs. This is a part time paid internship expected work to average 16-20 hours/week, negotiable based on student schedule. Anchored in the One Health model, this internship position is responsible for, but not limited to, coordinating offsite community outreach programs and clinics serving low-income communities in Arlington County. Additional duties include survey data collection and analysis as well as administrative assignments that directly support the program. Interested candidates pursuing studies in Public Health, Social Work and Community Engagement are encouraged to apply. Experience working with underserved populations is highly desired. Candidates must be confident working with the public under a variety of circumstances.  Proficiency in Spanish required, additional languages are highly preferred. 

  • Estimated end date: June 2025
  • Part time (16-20 hours a week)
  • Hourly rate of pay $18.00
  • College students attending local universities and community colleges are encouraged to apply

Who we are: 

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides animal adoption and community programs to Northern Virginia and D.C. Metropolitan areas, as well as animal rescue, control, and wildlife services within Arlington County. For more than 75 years, AWLA has remained committed to its mission. 

Responsibilities include the following however other duties may be assigned:

  • Support the planning and execution of AWLA’s mobile pet resource sites across the county; providing resources off-site to community members and their pets, including food, healthcare options and other programs and services AWLA offers.
  • Conduct surveys at mobile sites, track data and analyze results in consultation with Community Outreach Specialist
  • Assist with the planning and execution of AWLA’s free veterinary clinics
  • Assist in coordinating low cost/ free spay and neuter vouchers for community members
  • Performs additional duties as deemed necessary and assigned

Desired  Qualifications:

  • Must speak Spanish
  • Excellent in person communication skills both in person and over the phone
  • Experience working with low income or under resources communities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in fast paced events and programs
  • Flexible schedule and available to work weekends and evenings as events are scheduled
  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information


Typical physical & mental demands: Requires frequent bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, walking/standing,  eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, telephone, photocopier, calculator, and other equipment or machinery.  May be required to lift heavy  items or animals (upwards of 50 lbs) and be otherwise physically active. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with the public, volunteers, staff, and animals. Also requires flexibility and adaptability to  work with frequent interruptions. Must be comfortable around dogs, cats, small companion animals, reptiles,  amphibians and wildlife.
