Title: Universal Pre-Kindergarten Assistant Director

Department: Early Childhood Department

Reports To: Universal Pre-Kindergarten Assistant Director

Working Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 hours/day (hours vary) - 10 months

Classification: Non-exempt

Salary & Benefits: $23-25 an hour/40 hours per week, paid school breaks occurring in December, February, & April. Paid holidays and school closures, sick time, health and dental insurance, 401K, life insurance, long-term disability, and retirement benefits.


The position start date is the 2nd week of August and concludes on the last day of the academic calendar provided by the City School District of Albany.


Overview of Your Role

The Universal Pre-Kindergarten Assistant Director helps coordinate and oversee the 15 classrooms of the Boys & Girls Clubs (BGCCA) Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program in partnership with the UPK Director. Collaborating closely with the Early Childhood Department at the City School District of Albany (CSDA), this role ensures a seamless, high-quality educational experience for youth. While the CSDA oversees curriculum development, BGCCA handles curriculum implementation and maintains district standards.


Key responsibilities include fostering a supportive learning environment, monitoring classroom activities, and providing guidance to teachers and staff. The UPK Assistant Director regularly communicates with the UPK Director to stay updated on curriculum changes and district policies, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. This role is crucial to the UPK program's success, ensuring smooth operations and top-tier early childhood education.


KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Leadership & Supervision

  • Work directly with the UPK Director to support the administration and operation of all program components, with a focus on curriculum and instruction, assessment, parent engagement, and professional development.
  • Possess working knowledge of Universal Pre-Kindergarten classrooms within school districts and familiarity with assessment tools such as the NYS Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core, NYS Early Learning Guidelines, ECERS, and CLASS observation/assessment tools.
  • Assist in supervising substitutes and staff within the classroom.
  • Conduct periodic classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to teaching teams.
  • Participate in CSDA Directors meetings as required by the CSDA Early Childhood Department.
  • Collaborate with the CSDA Early Childhood Department and school leaders to evaluate teachers.
  • Conduct monthly one-on-one coaching sessions with UPK teachers to address progress and areas for growth, as directed by the UPK Director.
  • Collaborate with the UPK Director to develop and present staff training sessions related to early childhood/pre-kindergarten best practices.

Planning

  • Collaborate with the UPK Director to develop an annual plan for program growth.
  • Review and provide feedback to teachers to ensure compliance with CSDA requirements for progress reports, lesson plans, goal setting, and student data summary sheets and assessments.
  • Plan intervention strategies and provide resources for behavior management, social-emotional development, class dynamics, and peer mediation for teaching teams.
  • Keep detailed records of site visits, meetings, professional development sessions, and coaching sessions using Google Calendar.
  • Maintain a Google checklist of weekly tasks accomplished during site visits, teacher meetings, and coaching sessions, including any necessary follow-up steps.

Resource Management

  • Ensure that UPK teachers adhere to CSDA/BGCCA health and safety regulations and policies.
  • Assist in preparing classroom environments to meet ECERS standards, including rearranging and setting up classrooms as needed.

Partnership Development

  • Maintain continuous communication with the UPK Director and staff.
  • Provide monthly reports and conduct regular site visits to keep the UPK Director informed.
  • Adhere to the CSDA and BGCA partnership contract and agreements.
  • Seek and develop partnership opportunities to expand the program's reach, focusing on staff retention and recruitment.

Hiring & Staffing

  • Assist with interviews and hiring of potential Pre-K Teachers and Teaching Assistant candidates.

Additional Duties

  • Implement and execute lesson plans within a Pre-K classroom as required.
  • Coach staff in a classroom setup, including room arrangement, clean-up, organization, and labeling, aligning with NYS Early Learning Guidelines/ECERS standards.
  • Assist in integrating technology into the classroom and provide support to teachers, especially in remote settings.
  • Step in for staff when substitute teachers are unavailable.
  • Provide coaching and modeling to staff in areas requiring revision or improvement.

Internal: DOO, Albany UPK Director, UPK Teachers, Teaching Assistants, HR Director, Financial Admin, Marketing Department. External: CSDA, CSDA School Principals, CSDA Director of Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Assistant Coordinators.

Requirements:

CREDENTIALS, SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • 3+ years of teaching experience preferred in a school setting.
  • At least three years in a supervisory capacity in a pre-k or school setting (ex. Mentor teacher, coach, director).
  • Background check clearance.
  • Possession of a valid photo ID.
  • Possession of a valid driving license.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with 14 ECE credits.
  • Master's degree in Early Childhood Education or related education field - preferred.
  • NYS Certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth-2nd) - preferred or currently in progress.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position may involve lifting, bending, standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, reaching, and grasping. Must be able to demonstrate and/or describe activities to youth. This position works around youth and adults with moderate exposure to noise. This position will work both indoors and outdoors.
