NERC is the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) for North America, subject to oversight by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Provincial authorities in Canada. NERC's jurisdiction includes users, owners, and operators of the bulk power system, which serves nearly 400 million people.

The vision for the ERO Enterprise, which is comprised of NERC and the six Regional Entities, is a highly reliable and secure North American bulk power system. Our mission is to assure the effective and efficient reduction of risks to the reliability and security of the grid.

Your Impact

The Senior Engineer of System Awareness applies industry experience and subject-matter expertise to support the electric reliability organization’s (ERO) efforts to ensure a reliable and secure interconnected North American bulk power system. Your role analyzes conditions affecting the bulk power system, facilitates communication regarding abnormal or emergency conditions among NERC staff, appropriate stakeholders, ERO, and governmental agencies. The position will provide technical analysis and support to the situation awareness team and other NERC departments as needed, as well as support the NERC Alerts program and perform analysis for abnormal system events on the bulk power system.

The Senior Engineer of System Awareness reports to the Director of Situation Awareness and Personnel Certification and Credential Maintenance.

Your Role
  • Monitor and Support NERC reliability applications, including but not limited to:
    • Reliability Coordinator Information System (RCIS).
    • Situational Awareness for FERC, NERC, and Regional Entities’ System (SAFNR);
    • CERTS Applications, including Resource Adequacy and Intelligent Alarms.
    • NERC Reliability Coordinator Hotline; and
    • AVEVA PI System (formerly OSI PI).
  • Identify and analyze potential reliability threats to the bulk power system and support the development of NERC Alerts and awareness products.
  • Participate in scheduling and coordinating conference calls with ERO staff and government agencies during abnormal system conditions.
  • Support NERC staff by developing reports for briefings and special reports regarding abnormal conditions.
  • Assess system events, outages, and disturbances to determine the type and depth of analysis necessary.

Interface with NERC committees, subcommittees, forums and working groups regarding Situation Awareness initiatives and process development.

  • Lead/contribute to the ERO Crisis Action Plan, exercises, drills, and collaboration across ERO.
  • Participate in readiness drills and exercises conducted by ERO, Reliability Coordinators, and government agencies.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the Regional Entity staff, and government agency staff in the U.S. and Canada (especially U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and Canada National Energy Board).
  • Interface with Regional Entities for the purpose of a coordinated and consistent delivery of information, data, and situation awareness to industry stakeholders
  • Lead, manage, and/or participate in technical projects, report/paper and/or metric development/maintenance for topics related to reliability risk and impacts on the Bulk Electric System.
  • Perform the duties of NERC subject matter expert in specific areas of qualification.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to Information Technology Security, Cyber policies and procedures.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical field (electrical engineering or power system preferred).
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communications skills.
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in real-time bulk power system operations. Ability to multi-task and work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment without direct supervision.
  • Outstanding ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to present and communicate to/with NERC senior leadership, executives, and stakeholders.
  • The ability to work with limited supervision must be a self-starter.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
  • Experience working as a reliability coordinator or transmission system operator.
  • Supervisory experience in a real-time operations environment.
  • Strong understanding of technical power system studies and analysis.
  • Experience with root cause analysis as applied to power systems.
  • Proficiency with audio/video/communications technologies.

  • The position may be based remotely but must be able to travel to NERC offices, if needed. Reimbursement of travel expenses will be in accordance with the company’s travel and expense reimbursement policies.
