Job Summary: The Director of Ship Management leads the vessel operations team by positively promoting the company’s safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting vessel Master and crew. The position is responsible for vessel efficiency and reliability by managing the daily operation including cost, schedule, and budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance and adherence to the Safety Management System through enthusiastic support to the operations team.
  • Owns the adherence to all financial planning and alignment with customer requirements for cost effective operation of assigned vessels.
  • Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned projects, services, and functional areas within the department; recommends, develops, and administers policies and procedures.
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for assigned staff or groups; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; and meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Participates and attends weekly flash, safety, and operations meetings along with quarterly safety meetings.
  • Develops annual operating plan and capital budgets for vessels within the portfolio, based on input from vessel Port Engineers and Financial Analyst; coordinates with Financial Analyst to develop expense and capital forecasts.
  • Coordinates day-to-day activities between office and vessels; notifies and/or distributes pertinent vessel information to all involved employees.
  • Creates strategy for the life cycle engineering aspect of maintenance efforts to preserve the life expectancy of the machinery and hull.
  • Manages special technical engineering projects including drydocks, capital projects and availabilities periods as directed by Vice President of Marine Operations.
  • Ensures that vessels have proper certificates on board and assists in the timely arrangement of vessel surveys; assures that ABS, USCG certification items and other regulatory body items are completed.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises Captains, Chief Engineers, Port Engineers, Port Captains as assigned and vessel staff under his/her responsibility. Fulfills supervisor responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in marine engineering or marine transportation and three years documented sailing experience or five years shoreside experience as Port Engineer or Port Captain; or Chief Engineer’s License with three years Port Engineer experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence necessary to influence situations for desired outcomes.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or regulations.
  • Ability to draft reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers.
  • Knowledge of vessel systems installation, maintenance, and repair, including medium speed diesel and electric drive systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of technical manuals and drawings, shipboard arrangement, and organization, functioning of machinery, repair techniques, costs, and report preparation.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of various software programs including Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, and approved maintenance programs both shoreside and shipboard.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and separate data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Excellent verbal written communication skills.
  • Good project management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to maintain composer during operational impacting situations.
  • Client-driven and a collaborator.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Performing these duties acknowledges the possible dangers onboard vessels such as safely maneuvering throughout vessel(s) – i.e., ladders/staircases, and tank internals The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, noise level exposure can increase during visits to the vessels. Work may involve occasional work near moving mechanical parts and exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. Therefore, adhering to all necessary safety precautions and wearing required personal protective equipment to mitigate the potential risk of injury and prevention of hazards shall be followed.
