About the job:
This position works in the Natural Resources department to lead and perform maintenance, routine operations park ground natural areas, and implement fire fuel reduction projects. Additionally, this position serves as lead for vegetation and noxious weed monitoring. The Park Maintenance Worker 2 acts as project lead for other employees assisting on associated projects and /or seasonal employees.
A day in the life:
The information provided below encompasses the typical duties and capabilities linked with this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Leads the work of employees, including training in safe operation of tools and equipment, and providing feedback to employees; participates in work of crews; provides guidance and training in procedures and techniques as needed to ensure quality and quantity of work meets standards.
- Coordinates and provides direction on projects and/or programs; assigns work, identifies costs, adheres to project budget; and ensures equipment and supplies are available.
- Coordinates with contractors and acts as a resource in the field. May provide instruction and site specific details to reduce conflicts and to ensure a safe working environment.
- Monitor and maintain natural areas, including high desert non-forest vegetative communities, forest vegetative communities, riparian areas and various other areas with native vegetation as assigned.
- Purchases materials and supplies; reconciles purchasing statement.
- Identifies and appropriately controls noxious weeds; takes lead on restoring native areas; obtaining and keeping turf and ornamental herbicide applicator license current as required by BPRD standards.
- Monitors park sites and projects and determines the extent of work to be performed using current technology and methods (ex. ESRI Fieldmaps and Survey 123)
- Performs Park Maintenance 2 duties: maintains park landscape and natural areas, grounds and trails; performs snow removal and ice control duties; maintains equipment in clean and safe condition; operates equipment safely at all times.
- Promotes safe conditions in all park facilities.
- Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.
- Demonstrates district core behavior competencies including but not limited to flexibility, initiative, customer service, conflict management and other workplace self-awareness related behaviors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What you'll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and methods used in horticulture, arbor culture, noxious weed control, park maintenance repair, forestry, trail construction and resource management;
- Maintenance and safe operation of powered equipment and hand tools;
- Effective employee training techniques; general knowledge of effective supervisory practices;
- Basic computer programs and data entry; and
- Basic arithmetic, spelling, English and grammar.
Skill and Ability to:
- Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail or in person;
- Work independently while also able to work cooperatively with others;
- Safely operate equipment, mowers, tractors, hand and power tools;
- Effectively understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Exercise initiative and good judgment;
- Demonstrate leadership, organizational, planning and problem-solving skills;
- Effectively lead and direct others;
- Effectively handle difficult situations and people;
- Proficiently use specialized software application and operate a variety of office equipment including computers; and
- Establish and maintain effective, cooperative and respectful working relationships with all contacts.

- Previous working experience (seasonal or part-time): bio-tech, biological technician, botany technician, ecologist, ecology tech, biological science technician, field technician, scientific tech rangeland tech, invasive species crew, invasive plant technician
- Knowledge of noxious weed recognition and treatment
- Ability to read and interpret pesticide labels and safety data sheets
- Equipment use familiarity and maintenance
- Ability to monitor and track projects using ESRI GIS field applications via tablet or smart phone. Assist in invasive species management and monitoring.
- Native and invasive plant species identification skills in high desert juniper/bitterbrush/bunchgrass non-forest community type and ponderosa/bitterbrush/Idaho fescue forest community type habitats
- Ecological restoration
- Ability to run chainsaws, brush cutters, and backpack sprayers
- Working knowledge with GIS browser or desktop software such as ESRI ArcGIS Pro, Avenza, Mapbox, or Gaia.
- Fire fuels reduction and forest health experience

What We're Looking For:
Education, Experience, and Training:
- High School diploma or equivalent; AND
- Three (3) years of experience in park maintenance, horticulture and landscaping, natural resources, forest management, irrigation technology, or construction; OR
- Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.
License and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.
- Some positions may require possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license.
- Some positions may require chainsaw certification.

Supervisor received:
Works under the supervision of the Trails Supervisor. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decision in advance.
Working conditions:
The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.
- Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.
- Exposure to various hazardous chemical, fumes, and high noise levels.
- Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.
- Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.
- Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.
