Position overview:

The Finance Director oversees the financial operations of MHAAO and maintains and enhances the organization's financial systems. The Finance Director works closely with and reports to the Executive Director and is a core contributor to MHAAO’s senior leadership team. This role actively contributes to executive discussions with the Board Treasurer and the Finance Committee, to ensure transparency and strategic alignment in financial matters. Responsibilities include managing all financial reports, budgeting, financial analysis, adherence to compliance standards, oversight and improvement of financial policies and procedures, maintaining strong financial controls, and establishing a customer-service oriented culture within the Finance team. The Finance Director oversees MHAAO’s annual audit and oversees the financial aspects of capital campaigning.

Together with the Executive Director, the Finance Director will devise and execute financial strategies to seize opportunities and tackle challenges, bolstering MHAAO’s mission and long-term resilience.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain annual organizational budget. Review annual budget changes with MHAAO Board of Directors on a quarterly basis.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive program budgets on an annual and monthly basis. Meet with leadership to review budget changes. Assess spending and work to reduce costs.
  • Direct financial planning and strategy with the Executive Director
  • Analyze financial performance, monitor cash flow, file federal financial reports on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Analyze and interpret complex financial data and present the information in frequent, accessible reports and presentations to the Board of Directors and Executive Director.
  • Oversee annual audit and tax functions.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures. Assess, manage, and minimize risk.
  • Manage cash from any outside grants/funding, or capital campaign.
  • Have a clear understanding of and adhere to current laws and regulations.
  • Stay abreast of current market trends and patterns and act accordingly.
  • Supervise three accounting department staff, train employees, and provide professional development and management support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent experience demonstrating comprehensive financial knowledge and skillset.
  • Proven success developing and leading an accounting team.
  • Demonstrated non-profit and/or government sector accounting experience, federal grant financial management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in times of change.
  • An exceptional communicator with sensitivity to different communication and learning styles.
  • Comfortable with shared duties, and working both independently and as a team member
  • Reliable, punctual, and flexible with daily prioritization shifts inherent to a large nonprofit.
  • Able to listen and build positive rapport with a variety of personalities and styles and across departments.
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic accounting functions, GAAP, payroll, billing, direct and indirect allocations, accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and QuickBooks Online accounting software.
  • Ability to interact professionally, collaboratively, and effectively with all levels of employees, the Board of Directors, contractors, and vendors.
  • Lived experience of mental and/or addiction recovery, an understanding of peer services and the consumer/survivor/recovery movement is highly valued.
