Job DescriptionJob Description

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing compassionate and supportive care to individuals with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or other special needs. The DSP will assist with daily living activities, promote independence, and ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals in their care. This role requires a patient, empathetic, and dedicated individual who is committed to enhancing the quality of life for those they serve.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

1. Personal Care:

• Assist individuals with personal hygiene tasks, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.

• Support individuals with mobility needs, including transferring and positioning.

2. Daily Living Activities:

• Aid in meal preparation, feeding, and ensuring proper nutrition and hydration.

• Perform light housekeeping tasks, including cleaning, laundry, and maintaining a safe and tidy environment.

• Assist with shopping, errands, and recreational activities.

3. Health and Safety:

• Monitor and report any changes in the individual’s health or behavior to the appropriate healthcare providers.

• Administer medications and assist with medical appointments as directed by healthcare professionals.

• Follow established protocols for emergency situations and ensure a safe living environment.

4. Emotional and Social Support:

• Build and maintain positive relationships with individuals, providing emotional support and companionship.

• Encourage and facilitate social interactions, community involvement, and participation in recreational activities.

• Support individuals in developing and maintaining personal relationships and hobbies.

5. Documentation and Compliance:

• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of care provided, including daily logs, progress notes, and incident reports.

• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, policies, and procedures.

• Participate in training and professional development activities to stay current with best practices in direct care.

 

Qualifications:

 

• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or certification in a related field preferred.

• Prior experience in direct care, caregiving, or a related field is highly desirable.

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required.

• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Compassionate, patient, and empathetic demeanor.

• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including lifting and transferring individuals.

• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

 

Work Environment:

The Direct Care Professional will work in a variety of settings, including residential homes, group homes, or community settings. The role may involve exposure to various health conditions and requires adherence to safety and health guidelines.
