As a Software Developer at Understory, you'll focus on designing and developing web APIs and applications, integrating complex data systems, and supporting our cutting-edge hyperlocal climate risk engine. You'll be part of a nimble team that values precision, innovation, and the power of data to drive decisions and solve insurance in the era of climate change.

Your Main Role Responsibilities Will Include:
  • Create robust, scalable, and efficient applications using Java, JavaScript, and Python.
  • Develop and improve data access for APIs using SQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Develop new features and infrastructure in support of rapidly evolving business requirements.
  • Identify and resolve issues promptly, documenting solutions and processes for future reference.
  • Manage CI/CD pipelines to automate the building, testing, and deployment of applications. Set up, configure, and maintain server infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of applications.
  • Work with complex data sets, particularly time series data, to extract valuable insights and automate processes.
  • Integrate and manipulate geospatial data within applications to support innovative weather data and climate risk analysis.

You're exactly the person we're looking for if you:
  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing web or mobile applications professionally.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving skills and can work independently on multiple projects.
  • Disciplined work ethic with enthusiasm for overcoming challenges and solving problems .
  • Experience developing applications with relational databases and SQL.
  • Familiarity with web and backend development using Java and Maven and modern frameworks for building and consuming APIs (a plus).
  • Experience with building and maintaining data pipelines (a plus).
  • Have experience or knowledge in GIS and geospatial analysis (a plus).
  • Have familiarity or knowledge in networking and cybersecurity (a plus).
  • Are proficient in creating data visualizations and have a keen eye for detail (a plus).

Compensation includes:
  • Base salary commensurate with experience.
