Summary:
Working side-by-side with AIT’s customers personnel at the customer site, the Mechanical Engineering Technician is an active participant in the maintenance and continuous improvement of large-scale automated aerospace assembly systems. They apply knowledge of controls/electrical/electronic and mechanical best practices, as well as Root Cause Corrective Action and Continuous Improvement principles in diagnosing malfunctions, restoring, equipment to operation, and determining equipment modifications/enhancements. They maintain, test, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and components.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Understand and follow safety and environmental regulations, as well as identifies safety and environmental concerns.
- Adhere to the Customer and AIT Quality System and participates in Continuous Improvement.
- Start up and shut down equipment in accordance with operation’s requirements, company safety procedures and OSHA requirements for machine activation and shutdown.
- Support planned Preventive Maintenance.
- Support planned and urgent emergent Corrective Maintenance.
- Provide support for new product introduction to manufacturing.
- Creates and revises 3D designs and 2D drawings in accordance with internal and/or customer requirements, as required.
- Self-checks and reviews all work prior to final release to production.
- Follows rigorous root cause corrective action principles and practices
- Possess required experience, skills, and attributes for assigned level in engineering, technology, tools, and personal & leadership expectations.
- Coordinates with Customer and AIT subject matter experts to rapidly resolve problems and mitigate future issue recurrence.
- Upon request reviews existing drawings, models, and data ensure proper revision control of all changes, DCNs, and as-built information incorporated.
- Interfaces with other departments/personnel to achieve processing/manufacturing requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Three or more years related experience in one or more of the following: Heavy Machine Design, Structural Design Aerospace Tooling Assembly Systems and Automation.
- Manufacturing and machine shop background or relevant experience preferred.
- CAD Software Knowledge:
- CATIA V5, NX or Equivalent software knowledge (Solidworks, Pro E, etc.)
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (Ansys or Femap is preferred)
Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements:
- Ability to obtain, maintain and/or currently possess a security clearance is preferred, but may not be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
List of needed knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully accomplish the duties and responsibilities of the job.
- Promote and comply with good safety practices and habits, including but not limited to, use of all PPE.
- In depth knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics and mechanical systems.
- Read and understand drawings and schematics (ie: electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics).
- Knowledge of engineering and programming including electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and computer programming.
- Use computer-aided design (CAD).
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, fixtures, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Familiar with a variety of fabrication concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Highly motivated and keen to work in a fast-paced organization.
- Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner.
- Self-starter, ability to work independently, act and deliver results, exercising high level judgment in the absence of explicit direction.
Work Conditions:
Environment Type:
- Indoor office and production environments may or may not be temperature controlled.
Exposure Types:
- While no adverse environmental conditions expected, it is a production environment with risk from:
- Sharp and/or hot objects
- Dirt, dust, grease and/or oil
- Noisy environment
Work Hours:
- Standard work schedule, overtime may be necessary for meeting deadlines, required travel, emergent conditions.
- Able to occasionally work scheduled “off shifts” (i.e., 2nd, 3rd, or split shift), if required.
Travel Requirements:
- Remote - perform job responsibilities from customer work sites and AIT locations.
- This position can involve travel up to 10% of the time.
Physical Demands:

- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
- Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds.
- Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
