CERTIFIED PEER SPECIALIST I-Position Description for Lincoln County MO

SUMMARY

This is a professional position under the immediate supervision of the Associate Director of CPS Services and general supervision of the Deputy Executive Director. The position is supported through grant funding with focus on supporting the prevention, treatment and recovery of opioid use and other substance use disorder through peer support services. Certified Peer Specialists use the power of peers to support, encourage, and model recovery and resilience from behavioral health disorders in ways that are specific to the needs of each individual.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate as a team member in the formulation of program and/or agency planning, and in the coordination and implementation of CPS services.
  • Certified Peer Specialists interventions may include: sharing lived experiences of recovery, sharing and supporting the use of recovery tools and modeling successful recovery behaviors; helping individuals to connect with other peers and with their community at large; and assisting individuals with identifying strengths and personal resources to aid in their recovery.
  • Maintain an active caseload of 5-10 clients or other goal set mutually with supervisor.
  • Provide training for community members on peer services and resources.
  • Document all aspects of the job in compliance with agency, contractual, and funding requirements.
  • Perform all other related work as assigned.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • High degree of maturity and emotional stability. Stable in their recovery with at least one year in recovery. Current or former participant in a substance use treatment program.
  • Ability to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with volunteers, clients, staff members, and other community social service agen­cies.
  • Strong decision-making and leadership skills.
  • Cooperative spirit to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organize well, work with details, and exhibit follow through.
  • Flexibility with regard to evening and weekend work schedules.
  • Interest in personal and professional growth and the desire to seek supervision and knowledge to assist in this process.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or Bachelor's in education, psychology, social work, community organization, counseling, human services, or related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire obtain, at a minimum, Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Certification through the Missouri Credentialing Board.
  • Previous training or experience in public speaking, social services, minority relations, youth programs, planning/coordination, community organization, or teaching preferred.
  • Participate in Coalition work such as NPRA.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS

  • E-mail, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, data entry

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position works primarily in the community with local travel in the community. Must have a valid Driver’s License, reliable transportation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The physical requirements of this job includes: sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs on a regular basis; lifting up to 25lbs, pulling and/or pushing on occasion.
