Mission/Job Scope:

The Distribution Center Director is responsible for the overall performance of the warehouse, including operations, customer service, office operations, and transportation. The DC Director plans, organizes’, staffs, directs, and controls all warehouse and transportation activities. The selection, professional development, and motivation of all team members are key responsibilities. The DC Director assists top management in establishing warehouse performance objectives and strategic planning. The DC Director is accountable for achieving prescribed company objectives regarding cost control, productivity, customer service, and profits.

Outcomes:

  1. Communications - Interact with top management, corporate staff and employees. Maintain contact with retail management and customers. Hold management and staff meetings to organize warehouse activities. Participate in local trade, professional, and civic associations as a representative of the company.
  2. Operations - Ensure the development of systems and procedures for operating and managing physical facilities, human resources, equipment, and products in a cost-effective manner. Plan, direct, and implement warehouse and transportation operations and administrative support to meet prescribed productivity and service goals. Operate in compliance with federal, state and local statutes.
  3. Labor Management - Direct the operations of warehouse and transportation management team to achieve prescribed objectives. Apply sound communication and motivational techniques. Develop and maintain a productive staff by creating programs for hiring, training, and professional development. Provide direction to the management team to supervise, counsel and discipline subordinates. Provide Human Resources with appropriate hiring information, performance evaluations, wage increases, and terminations.
  4. Customer Service - Assist in the establishment of service standards for all customers and communicate these standards to all personnel. Assure that customers receive the required level of operations and administrative support. Maintain appropriate contact with all customers and respond to requests when needed.
  5. Budgeting - Develop and recommend an annual operating budget. Develop and manage a system of controls to ensure service levels and operational performance goals are met with prescribed cost parameters.
  6. Equipment & Facilities - Procure equipment and facilities required assuring efficient operation and meeting company goals. Develop suitable programs for maintaining company standards of sanitation, maintenance, security, housekeeping, and safety of equipment and facilities in a manner that assures their most efficient operation. Keep informed on relevant new technology and make recommendations as applicable.
  7. Reporting - Ensure that all records and reports regarding warehouse and transportation activity are prepared on a timely basis and effectively maintained. Maintain required documents in an organized and structured environment. Review operating goals and standards on a daily basis and monitor achievement.
  8. Management Information Systems - Ensure the necessary information systems are operating efficiently to maintain daily warehouse operations. Remain knowledgeable regarding changes in hardware and software technology.
  9. Availability - Tour the warehouse regularly to answer questions, evaluate operations, and solve problems. When possible, ride with private fleet driver and visit stores.

Essential Competencies:

Communication: This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills. DC Directors must work with all levels throughout the organization as well as with vendors and customers outside of Leslie’s. They must be able to create well-written, professional correspondence and documentation.

Presentation Skills: DC Directors are responsible for conducting group training classes, so they need to be able to speak effectively in front of others, manage the presentation, and establish credibility quickly and easily.

Interpersonal Skills: DC Directors deliver one-on-one training and coaching sessions with team members. They must demonstrate good listening skills and build rapport quickly.

Attention to Detail: DC Directors communicate and train associates on all company policies and procedures. They must provide information and answers that are accurate and complete. They should not cut corners to take short-cuts that jeopardize safety, sales, customer service, or operational excellence.

Superior Customer Service: DC Directors must possess an attitude of serving others by helping them learn and develop. DC Mangers strive to provide the best possible environment for their associates and be responsive to requests from the operations team, vendors, and Leslie’s corporate offices.

Sound Judgment: DC Directors are required to exercise good judgment when leading training sessions and make decisions that are in the best interest of the company and the team members involved. DC Directors are also required to make personnel recommendations to retail operations leadership.

Qualifications:

The Distribution Center Director requires experience in warehousing and logistics management, as well as general supervisory experience. Familiarity with personal computers and material handling equipment is required. Skills in planning, staffing, budgeting, organizing, controlling, and communicating are required. The ability to develop effective relationships, provide leadership and integrate diverse organizations and individuals toward common objectives is critical.

Education – College degree is preferred.

Experience – Five to seven years of experience in logistics is preferred, with one to three years in a similar position.
