Position Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a temporary Senior Shipping & Receiving Clerk. In this role, you join a team of Shipping & Receiving Clerks in the receipt and distribution of incoming shipments, as well as the processing of outbound shipments under the guidance of the Manager, Shipping & Receiving. Your responsibilities will include daily operation of our warehouse, including loading and unloading trucks, product put away and retrieval, distribution of inventory to designated locations and recording all visitors to the warehouse. Daily assignment to the warehouse location will require working independently for some portion of the day. In addition, based upon daily assignments, your responsibilities may include receiving and distributing incoming mail and shipments to designated drop-off locations throughout the Laboratory buildings, preparing items for shipment, and ensuring the proper processing of all outbound shipments. Additionally, you will verify and maintain records of incoming and outgoing shipments.

Position Responsibilities

 

  • Responsible for all operations of the warehouse, including but not limited to, open and close building, receipt and distribution of incoming shipments, storage of inventory, pick and pack orders, and the processing of outbound shipments at the direction of the Manager, Shipping & Receiving.
  • Operate material handling equipment, including power jack, forklift and ladders.

 
May also include, based on assignments:
 

  • Pick up incoming mail from local U.S. Postal facility.
  • Sort and route incoming mail, distribute mail to Laboratory buildings, and collect outgoing mail for processing.
  • Verify outgoing mail addresses and condition for processing.
  • Determine mailing methods, weigh letters or packages, and affix postage using automated postal machines or by hand.
  • Sort processed outgoing mail/packages by carrier type and prepare for delivery or carrier pickup.
  • Deliver processed outgoing mail to local U.S. Postal facility.
  • Transfer outgoing packages to designated carriers.
  • Assist customers with packing and shipping Laboratory-related shipments and personal items.
  • Receive incoming shipments (packages and/or truck shipments) to the Laboratory.
  • Process and verify inbound receipts using bill of lading and/or packing slips.
  • Sort and route inbound receipts for distribution or warehouse storage.
  • Record inbound receipt data in the "Daily Receiving Log" database system.
  • Pick and stage "Fulfillment Orders" for internal distribution.
  • Load delivery vehicles (vans and trucks) for inbound shipment distribution.
  • Deliver inbound shipments to designated locations throughout the Laboratory buildings and file signed delivery receipts.
  • Prepare outbound shipments and required documentation, arrange carrier pickups.
  • Requisition and maintain inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • Perform other receiving and shipping functions as directed by the Manager, Shipping & Receiving and/or Senior Shipping & Receiving Clerk, Facilities.

 

Position Requirements

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: 3 years of experience in a receiving or mail room environment with a focus on customer service.
Other: Certified operator of forklifts, material handling equipment and Valid NYS Driver’s license.

Compensation 
The salary range for this role is $24-$25 per hour. The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining a base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., years of relevant experience, education, credentials, and internal equity).
