JOB DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE: The duties of a dental assistant are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. The dental assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. A sense of urgency must be present to aid the dentist and always provide the best quality care for each patient. The dental assistant is expected to anticipate any needs by the supervising dentist, when working on a patient, to make each appointment flow easily and as efficient as possible, by performing the following duties:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assisting the dentist, EFDA (auxiliary), or hygienist in various dental procedures by:

a. Accurately set-up all equipment, materials, and infection control devices

b. Know and assist during the procedure by:

i. Understanding the steps and flow

ii. Have materials, equipment, and instruments available and accurately hand off to expedite procedure while maintaining patient safety

iii. Act as a liaison for the patient to ensure their concerns are addressed and they understand recommended treatment

iv. Use proper infection control techniques during "tear down" and disinfect the room after each use, plus prepare equipment and instruments for sterilization

2. Obtain and accurately record dental records including but limited to intra and extra oral radiographs, intra-oral photographs, dental photographs, and patient interview and/or chief complaint

3. Accurately record and update patient's medical history, blood pressure and pulse and report to the doctor

4. Accurately record all procedures, consultations and visits and review with the doctor

5. Monitor sedated patients and ensure their safety by:

a. Monitor, record and report vital signs every 30 minutes or as needed

b. Monitor, record, and report patient's mental status before and after procedure and as needed

c. Assist patient during ambulation using assist devices as needed and record

d. Educate caregiver on any post-procedure and post-sedation care and record

e. Understand how to use and have available any emergency equipment

6. Complete follow-up care calls

7. Always follow proper infection control by following protocol and proper use of PPE

8. Properly use and maintain all equipment used in the practice and report any malfunctions immediately

9. Always see to patient's comfort before, during and after dental treatment

10. Educate patients in:

a. All procedures provided in the practice

b. Pre- and post-procedure instructions including but not limited to:

i. Surgery

ii. Restorative

iii. Oral hygiene instructions

iv. Nutritional counseling

v. Sedation

c. Recommended treatment plan

11. Take impressions (alginate and poly-vinyl siloxane) and properly pour casts

12. Act as a liaison between doctor and laboratory as needed and record

13. Competently perform acceptable duties for dental assistants set forth by the Ohio Revised Code

14. Strives to obtain and maintain certifications (dental radiology, Certified Dental Assistant)

15. Performs various dental laboratory tasks such as but not limited to:

a. CEREC crown staining, glazing, and firing

b. Fabrication of bleaching trays, bite splints, custom trays

c. Ensure your patient's lab case is properly packed, labeled and shipped in a timely manner, record all lab slips in patient's chart

16. Maintain proper communication with patients, visitors, vendors, and staff by:

a. Acknowledge and greet others in a pleasant manner

b. Keep communication focused on patient - do not discuss personal matters "over'' the patient or in front of visitors

c. Always follow HIPPA guidelines to protect patients' right to privacy. Never discuss another patient or private office matters in front of patients or visitors, nor disclose private information outside of the workplace

d. Understands he/she represents the practice in and out of the office setting. Conducts professional and personal life in good moral standing representative of the practice culture and community standards

17. Be active in the overall growth of the practice

18. Be present and active at all staff meetings

19. Be a positive representative for Woodlawn Dental in and out of office

20. Attend all required trainings which may include car/air travel

21. Operates standard office equipment efficiently to include:

a. Phone system

b. Facsimile machine

C. Computers/printers

d. Scanners

e. Photocopy machine

f. Cameras

Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary:

1. All duties performed by a dental assistant

2. Placement of dental posterior and anterior fillings, temporary crowns, temporary fillings and sealants, and other acceptable duties set forth by the Ohio Revised Code

3. Acquire images for CEREC crown design and assess fit before final glazing and firing

4. Complete preliminary existing charting and report to doctor

5. Oversees duties performed by dental assistants

6. Oversees and assists with training of dental assistants

7. Monitor patients progress through their plan of treatment

8. Assist with special projects as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or general education degree (GED); and no less than one-year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Dental Radiology Certificate required (dental assistant and EFDA).

CPR required (dental assistant and EFDA).

CDA or CODA Certification (optional for dental assistant, required for EFDA). EFDA Registration (required for EFDA).

Other certificates/licenses not required but strongly encouraged, for example, coronal polishing certificate.

LANGUAGE ABILITY

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of patients or employees of our organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carryout instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, talk, hear and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb of balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

EFDA EXPECTATIONS

30-60 Days

1. All duties performed by a dental assistant.

2. Placement of dental sealants.

3. Placement of Class I, Class V and Class VI restorations and crown build ups.

4. Placement of temporary crowns and temporary fillings.

5. Acquire images for CEREC crowns with digital scanner.

6. Complete preliminary charting and report to doctor.

90 Days

1. Placement of Class II, Class III and Class IV restorations. (Take BWX of these until cleared by doctor.)

2. Assess the fit of crowns prior to final glazing and firing, any adjustments to be performed by doctor or trained EFDA.

3. Oversee duties performed by dental assistants.

4. Oversee and assist with training of dental assistants.

5. Work with treatment coordinators to ensure the doctor’s schedule is filled.

6 Months

1. Tracing of margins and design of crowns (anterior and posterior), doctor or trained EFDA to evaluate design.

2. Packing cord for doctors before imaging and all cord needed to restore teeth.

3. Placement and removal of Invisalign buttons.

4. Handle all denture appts. (adj., relines (hard/soft))

12 Months

1. Be able to perform all above listed duties proficiently and in the appropriate time allotted for each procedure.

2. Be able to supervise shift staff and schedule.

Doctors will check all restorations until they see fit; however, per doctors, after 3 months they should not be adjusting occlusion and interproximal contacts but merely just “looking” at restorations. We will meet monthly to gauge your progression in all areas, remediation will be completed as needed and as seen fit by doctors.

If all these expectations are not met at any point during the timeline, we will meet with you and decide a course of action.
