TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

 

The following is indicative of the level and types of activities performed by incumbents in this title. It is not meant to be all-inclusive and does not preclude a supervisor from assigning activities not listed which could reasonably be expected to be performed by an employee in this title. 

 

  1. Performs routine maintenance work including checking fluids and batteries, changing oil and reassembling equipment;  

  1. Inspects brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearing, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition; 

  1. Adjusts brakes, aligns wheels, tightens bolts and screws and reassembles equipment; 

  1. Uses hydraulic jacks or hoists to raise trucks, buses or other heavy equipment; 

  1. Test drives Buses and trucks to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly;  

  1. Examines and adjusts protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices;  

  1. Inspects and verifies dimensions and clearance of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications;  

  1. Attached test instruments to equipment and reads dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions; 

  1. Rewires ignition systems, lights and instrument panels; 

  1. Repairs and adjusts seats, doors and windows and install and repairs accessories;  

  1. Inspects, repairs and maintains automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors; 

  1. Aligns front end suspension systems; 

  1. Makes road calls for disabled buses, repairing and/or returning to garage; 

  1. Inspects, troubleshoots and repairs fare-tank and vaulting system malfunctions and/or failures and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operation condition. 

  1. Notes any equipment problems or unusual or excessive wear observed during the performance of duties and reports them to supervisor; 

  1. May assist in snow and ice control activities; 

  1. Assists in the fueling of equipment; 

  1. May perform yard and garage cleaning and maintenance activities. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 

 

Working knowledge of the principles, practices and tools of the automotive diesel mechanic trade;  working knowledge of the operation and mechanical functions of diesel coaches; good knowledge of accepted safety practices and OSHA standards for the trade; good knowledge of automotive repair methods, particularly regarding areas relevant to diesel coaches; ability to follow oral and written instructions; manual dexterity; good hand and eye coordination; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Three (3) years of full-time work experience which primarily involved automotive and/or construction equipment maintenance and repair duties, one (1) which must include diesel powered vehicle and/or machines. 

 

NOTE: Training or education in the field of automotive repair may be substituted for the above work experience on a month for month basis. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: 

 

1. Candidates must possess a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's license at time of  

application and to maintain position. This license must have CDL endorsements for air brakes and passenger and contain no restrictions other than those relating to personal physical conditions. Such restrictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis for compatibility with job duties and will not be an  

automatic bar to employment. A copy of the current valid license is required at time of application in order to be able to be considered for appointment.
