About the Position:
Greentown is looking for a mission-driven Director of Human Resources to enhance its HR infrastructure and strategy as the organization expands its impact over the next critical decade of climate action. In 2023, Greentown transitioned from a Public Benefit-corporation to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and as such we are looking for Director of Human Resources candidates who ideally have a mix of both nonprofit and private-sector HR experience.
The Director of Human Resources will report to the Chief Financial Officer and will play a central role in recruiting and retaining top talent as the organization expands on its more than a decade of climate impact, as well as shaping the organization's culture and success. This role will be responsible for leading all aspects of HR, from talent acquisition and employee engagement to compliance and workforce development. This role will initially be as a sole contributor with outsourced support for talent acquisition. We would expect this person to expand the HR team as the organization grows over time.
The Director of Human Resources role will encompass five key elements: 1) talent acquisition, 2) employee development and engagement, 3) performance management, 4) staff activities that focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion, and 5) legal and regulatory compliance.

Enhance and manage the full employee life-cycle, covering onboarding, offboarding, training, and performance management for the full organization
Oversee the development and maintenance of our employee handbook and HR policies while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal employment law
Oversee the optimization of our HR information system (ADP) for improved efficiency and employee experience
Lead the recruitment process, with support from an outsourced talent acquisition team member, to identify and attract top talent for a wide range of roles within Greentown; participate in job-description development to support the success of these recruitment efforts
Establish mentorship and training programs to drive employee professional development and job-specific skill development
Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture that aligns with our values of being open, respectful, appreciative, resourceful, and resilient and making work fun
Promote and drive initiatives to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization
Oversee the HR budget, ensuring efficient use of resources in recruitment, training, employee programs, and HR technology
Occasional travel may be required
Who We’re Looking For:
Mission-driven professional who is motivated by the goal of supporting early-stage entrepreneurs and solving some of the world’s biggest climate challenges
5-7 years of experience in HR in a similar-sized or larger nonprofit or for-profit organization; experience in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations is preferred, but not required
A professional with a positive, creative, can-do attitude and a constant focus on strengthening effective and healthy communication
Bachelor's degree in HR or other related field; master’s degree or HR certification a plus
Knowledge of employment laws and regulations
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
Experience with startups in the climatetech industry is a plus
Compensation, Location, and Benefits:
The salary for this position is $93,000 and is commensurate with experience up to $111,000. In addition to a competitive salary, Greentown Labs also offers a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401k plan, and 25 days (5 weeks) of PTO plus holidays. This role is expected to be on-site at Greentown in Somerville, MA. or Houston TX at least three days per week, with the option to work remotely two days per week.
Employment with Greentown Labs is on an “at will” basis, which means either the applicant/employee or Greentown Labs can end the employment relationship at any time, for any reason, with or without prior notice.
Equal opportunity:
Greentown Labs seeks to fully represent our community and constituencies—particularly low-income communities and communities of color—to amplify those voices and provide opportunities to participate in the direction and leadership of the organization. We actively encourage candidates from broad, diverse backgrounds to apply.
