Job Summary:

CASES is seeking a Mental Health Specialist to join our dynamic and passionate newSTART team, comprised of various specialists and professionals dedicated to supporting individuals with mental health challenges. The Mental Health Specialist will play a vital role in managing a caseload of participants with mental health vulnerabilities, connecting them to essential treatment and support services that promote community integration and well-being. This includes addressing mental health symptoms, reducing substance use, and ensuring stable housing and income supports are in place.

The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to social justice and community safety, with a strong belief in evidence-based practices, harm reduction, and a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed approach to service delivery. This role requires a passionate, mission-driven individual who aligns with our values and has relevant experience in the field, demonstrating a genuine desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.

Shift Hours: 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday

Salary: The salary for this role is $55,000 per year.

Location Address: 2090 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Boulevard, New York, NY 10027. Our office is easily accessible by public transportation.

What you will be doing:

  • Manage caseload of 10 (on average) higher risk participants.
  • Coordinate person-centered individual and group sessions, submit referrals and provide out reach efforts to internal and external providers.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments incorporating impact of legal circumstances to develop effective and individually tailored service plans.
  • Utilize Motivational Interviewing and other evidence-based approaches and techniques in service delivery.
  • Liaise with community-based organizations with which participants are engaged, such as treatment providers, care managers, and homeless services resources.
  • Complete all documentation in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as required by the Director, Senior Director, and CASES leadership.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 2+ years of experience working in direct care services with individuals with serious mental illness and criminal legal involvement.
  • Experience using evidence-based treatments for serious mental illness, substance use, and trauma, as well as understanding of gender-responsive services and the risk, need, responsivity model of criminal behavior.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse team.

Additional, skills we are looking for preferred but are not essential skills:

  • Peer credentials - i.e., certification of graduation from a recognized peer specialist training program, such as the Howie the Harp Peer Advocacy and Training Center Forensic Peer Specialist Program.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
