Job Description - Clinical Supervisor

The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for co-managing the clinical care provided to all levels of treatment services offered by Hope By The Sea. This includes a combination of administrative and clinical practice responsibilities, which are related to the supervision of unlicensed Therapists, policies, procedures, and practice. The Clinical Supervisor is also part of the Management Team, which supports compliance with all delivery of services to the fiscal, ethical and legal standards upheld by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and the core values and mission of Hope By The Sea.

The individual in this position provides program leadership for integrated primary care and behavioral health services and serves as a clinician on the behavioral health team. In addition to performing developmental and psychological evaluations, including psychometric testing, psychological evaluations, psychotherapy sessions, family counseling, and behavioral health consultation with clients and colleagues, this position also supervises behavioral health specialists and has program oversight and performance improvement functions.

The Clinical Supervisor is actively involved as a provider of client care, and in the coordination of client care, in order to ensure the smooth progression of the clients’ psychological and medical evaluation and treatment. Under general supervision of the Clinical Director and in a collaborative leadership role in the organization, this individual is responsible for ensuring the overall effectiveness of the organization’s clinical performance. The Clinical Supervisor works closely with the Clinical Director relating to the program and clinical services provided by therapists and counselors.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Uphold and enforce the agency’s standards, policies and procedures, client rights, and professional code of ethics and conduct.

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Director , Executive Director, and Program Physician to ensure continuous quality improvement within each core element of client care offered by Hope By The Sea.

  • Supervise Behavioral Health Program therapists, including hiring, providing guidance and direction, training, evaluating performance, initiating corrective action or disciplinary action and other personnel actions.

  • Provide behavioral and mental health services to clients; counsel individuals and groups regarding problems such secondary mental health disorders, including mild to moderate stress-related disorders, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorder, and family conflict, ASAM Criteria and documentation in order to modify behavior and/or improve personal, social and vocational adjustment.

  • Provide and/or coordinate clinical training(s) for all direct-care clinical staff and support staff (when appropriate) on topics of substance use disorders and mental health disorders, co-occurring disorders, evidenced based treatment practices, and clinical topics relevant to services provided by Hope By The Sea.

  • Identify psychological, emotional or behavioral issues and diagnose disorders, using information obtained from interviews, tests, records, consultations with primary care providers and reference materials according to the DSM-IV-TR.

  • Participate in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of MFT, MSW, and ACSW, students from various graduate schools on an annual basis (if applicable).

  • Maintain certification requirements of licensure through supervision of interns

  • Consult with psychiatry whenever required or clinically relevant.

  • May provide psychological services to clients and staff in the event of disasters and emergencies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned as directed by the Clinical Director.

  • Responsible for oversight and management of client personal safety needs.

  • Ensure action is taken to correct problems identified through record review, fiscal audits, satisfaction surveys and other quality control mechanisms used to improve performance effectiveness, efficiency, accessibility, and satisfaction of persons served and their families.

  • Participate in management team meetings and attend Joint Commission team meetings when requested by the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Participate in 24-hour on-call availability and manage on-call staffing schedules.

  • Maintain clinical competency by pursuing education and training opportunities

  • Assist and work with the Core Compliance Team regarding strategic and long-range planning as needed.

  • Adhere to code of ethics, legal aspects of clinical practice, professional standards, duty to warn, abuse and neglect reporting policies and procedures, and exercise professionalism at all times.

  • Exercise awareness in cultural competency, client satisfaction, quality of services, client needs, and overall health and safety staff and clients.

Collateral Duties

Additional duties may be required if deemed necessary by administration.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Minimum Qualifications – Licensed Mental Health Professional (LPCC, LCSW, LMFT, etc.) with at least five years of experience working in a substance abuse and/or mental health treatment setting. Knowledgeable in ASAM-PPC2 patient placement criteria and ability to effectively communicate peer-to-peer medical necessity reviews with managed care agencies. Clinical Supervision Certification Credential from an accredited State-approved certifying organization. Possess exceptional leadership and communication skills and knowledge of the principles, standards, practices, terminology, and documentation requirements of community-based substance abuse/mental health care.

  • Preferred Qualifications – Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) with 5 years experience working in the field of behavioral health treatment. Knowledgeable of mental health and substance abuse, including co-occurring mental health and medical disorders.

  • Preferred Experience: application of the ASAM criteria and medical necessity in clinical documentation.

  • Excellent conflict resolution, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and staff training skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office and Electronic Health Records.

  • Ability to demonstrate growth and initial growth of their team. Research latest evidenced based treatment methods, and demonstrate leadership and mentoring skills to designated support teams.

  • Possess a valid license from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

  • Possess the ability to supervise interns

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Current T.B. Clearance.
