The HANAC Beacon program is operated by HANAC Inc. and serves children in grades K-12, and adults of all ages.  The Beacon program runs a full-service afterschool program designed to help our younger community members acquire the skills they need to graduate from high school, succeed in their chosen career, and give back to the community. Typical programs and activities include Homework Help, Tutoring, S.T.E.A.M., Dance, Cheer, Arts & Crafts, Zumba, Adult ESL and TASC, High School and College Access, Holiday Open programs, Summer Camp, and Sports & Recreation.

The Assistant Director is in a key position in managing the afterschool program and school-age enrichment programs. With guidance, the Program Director will provide program support and supervision. The Assistant Program Director position deals with all program operations including daily program implementation, lesson development, administrative task, and being a role model to program staff, and the families serviced.

The Assistant Program Director's responsibilities are but are not limited to:

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the participants in the program by providing close supervision of all activities.
  • Support the Program Director in program development, implementation, staffing, participant registration, supervision, and program schedule.
  • Assist in managing, training, and coaching of program staff and volunteers.  
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to organize schedules, maintain accurate attendance logs, collect lesson plans, ensure snack and space reservations are in place, organize trips, submit supply requests, and address programmatic needs.
  • Familiarize yourself with all New York City Department of Health, and funder regulations to ensure that all contractual obligations, specifically in enrollment and rate of participation, and requirements are met.
  • Build relationships with the school principal and administrative team to facilitate seamless integration of the program staff and extend hours into the overall school culture
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders (parents, school staff, administration, funders, and community).
  • Input accurate time and attendance records for all staff, help maintain current staff and participant files, incident and accident reports, and other required documentation and program data.
  • Together with and in the absence of the Program Director, the APD will serve as the program's immediate point of contact.
  • Assist the Program Director in conducting classroom observations, report back program Glows and Lows, and address concerns as they arise.
  • Supervise the implementation of a variety of age-appropriate and theme-related activities.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure program content supports initiative goals and outcomes.
  • Create a strong sense of community that values respect, acceptance, and high expectations.
  • Work cooperatively with peers, professional staff, and other departments.
  • Work closely with supervisor to ensure best practices and program quality;
  • Maintain accurate program documentation (incident, accident, and behavioral reports, attendance, and sign-in/ sign-out sheets).
  • Consults with the Program Director when difficult or unfamiliar situations arise.
  • Actively participate in all training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
  • Maintain a close relationship and report to the Program Director for delegated tasks and future assignments. Perform other duties and tasks as deemed necessary.
  • Completes all job-related tasks and uses program time effectively during scheduled working hours.
  • Must take part in 15 hours or more of professional development opportunities per year and be available for program activities and family engagement events outside of regular program hours.  

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in a related field preferred with at least two years of experience working with students in an elementary or middle school setting and supervisory experience.  
  • High School Diploma accepted with youth experience and pursuing a degree in a related field.  
  • The Assistant Program Director will be responsible for the implementation of the diverse activities that will be offered to our program participants. 
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the commencement of employment or adhere to enhanced protocols if the Company determines your job position requires accessing a HANAC worksite.

Salary: $46,000 (depending on experience)

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm and Saturdays 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (Hours and shifts vary depending on activities, open holidays, and program events.) The schedule is between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. during open holidays and Summer Camp programming.
