POSITION:                         Sewing Machine Operator
LOCATION:                       Asheville, NC
Minimum Qualifications:  NO experience required. High school diploma or GED

Salary Requirements: $15-16.00/hr 
Schedule:  Work 4 days a week (10-hour days Monday through Thursday)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produce materials for contract sales
  • Assemble pieces of garments by matching patterns and/or dye lots
  • Operate sewing machines to join sections of garments or other articles into finished products on a piece-work or production basis.
  • Operate stitching machines to sew strips to the required sizes and shapes or join other pieces.
  • Operate tackers, pocket-setters, buttonhole makers, hammers, and other machines to perform various operations in fabricating garments and other articles.
  • Examine and repair garments as needed.
  • Assist with production as needed
  • Prepare and load production materials
  • Assist the Production Supervisors at Industries of the Blind (IFB) as requested.
  • Always maintain a safe work environment
  • Act as a positive role model at all times
  • Assure the use of safety standards, including proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Assure quality standards at all times when performing assigned tasks
  • Communicate and work with IFB staff and communicate with OE Management Staff
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift and carry parcels weighing up to 50 lbs. across a large warehouse
  • Able to push carts with up to 100 lbs. of parcels across a large warehouse
  • Able to lift boxes and items weighing up to 15 lbs.
  • Able to work standing for 8-hour shift
  • Able to sit up for 8 hours
