Director of Community Initiatives

Supervises: Youth Mental Health Coordinator, BBYO Social Worker, Hillel of Metro Detroit (HMD) Social Worker, MSU Hillel Social Worker, JCADA Coordinator (PT)

Job Summary

Oversees mental health programming and initiatives for the Metro Detroit community, and the Jewish community in particular. Supervises youth mental health coordination, BBYO, HMD and MSU Hillel social workers, and community alliance focused on domestic abuse. Establishes and manages relationships with service providers, networks, lay leaders, synagogues, schools, youth groups and other important organizations and individuals. Pursues funding sources and manages grants as needed. Facilitates collection of metrics for quality improvement process and assists in service delivery evaluation for programs.

Principal Accountabilities

• Direction - Facilitate and guide program coordinators in effective management of mental health initiatives, including the We Need to Talk/Youth Mental Health Initiative and Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (JCADA).

• Supervision - Maintain high quality staff performance by coaching, counseling, training, supporting, disciplining, monitoring and appraising job results for assigned staff. Provide clinical case support for relevant staff.

• Management - Establish and develop policy, process and procedures with the support of quality improvement. Oversee service planning and delivery, and follow up on outcomes and areas of concern.

• Community Partnerships – Develop external partnerships to identify service gaps, prevent duplication of services, and maximize synergies with other community service providers for mental health programming.

• Marketing – Collaborate on outreach and marketing for mental health initiatives with the Development/Marketing team at JFS, JFD when appropriate, and in coordination with other outreach efforts across the agency. Represent the agency in networking groups, community fairs, expos, and in meetings with a wide variety of providers.

• Policy/Procedure - Assist with dissemination of agency policy and procedures and ensure comprehension through written, oral and technological communications.

• Administrative - Complete all required forms and documentation meeting the standards of promptness.

• Personnel - Assist Human Resources and applicable management staff in recruiting, orienting, evaluating and training staff members.

• Resource Management - Contribute to the effective use of agency resources by identifying and implementing options for cost containment.

• Training - Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending agency in-service programs, educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks.

• Security and Privacy –Adhere to agency and client protection policies by regularly acclimating yourself with the JFS privacy, safety and security policies made available within the employee handbook.

• Employee Philanthropy –Support and engage in a culture of philanthropy in all work done on behalf of the agency. Participate annually in agency and partner related philanthropic activities and campaigns.

• Mission Dedication –Embody the mission and values of JFS in all work done on behalf of the agency. Utilization of the JFS key strategies will ensure success in this accountability.

• Misc. – Other duties as assigned by management.


Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years Human Service experience, with previous supervisory and facilitative work.

• Master’s degree in social work or a related field.
