Summary:

Under regular supervision, the Fiber Optic Technician performs basic tasks and projects of lesser complexity, following established guidelines and detailed instructions. This role involves locating fiber optic cables, managing the outside plant network within a specified geographic area, including metro and long haul fibers, and becoming familiar with the company's systems and applications.

External Essential Duties:

  • Manage asset processes, including deliveries and replenishment of consumables.
  • Maintain tools, test sets, and electronic equipment, including fiber optic RX/TX equipment.
  • Monitor, locate, and assist in executing restoration in case of service interruptions.
  • Proactively respond to potential problem areas to ensure network integrity.
  • Learn all necessary systems and applications to perform job functions adequately.
  • Update installation records and enter detailed log information on trouble tickets.
  • Provide status updates and reports related to assignments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED or 1 year of relevant job experience.
    • Relevant job experience includes similar industry roles and essential duties.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
    • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Ability to work in all weather conditions.

Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Education and Experience:
    • 2 years of education (High School/GED) in Electronics or Telecommunications, or a combination of education and experience.
    • Attention to detail with good organizational capabilities.
    • Ability to prioritize with good time management skills.
  • Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
    • 0-2 years of experience in network monitoring, installation, or maintenance/repair.
    • Entry-level technician experience and/or knowledge in at least one of the four major technician disciplines:
      • Outside Plant (Fiber locating, OTDR, Mass Fusion Splicing, etc.)
    • Knowledge of locating fiber optic cable, right-of-way, and As-Builts.
    • Ability to maintain site security and cleanliness.
    • Proficiency in PC skills and Microsoft Windows and Office applications.
    • Ability to quickly learn corporate databases.
    • Availability for on-call 24x7 on a rotational basis, including stand-by, call out, dispatch, and overtime as required by the business.
