Assistant Controller
A nonprofit organization in DC is looking for an Assistant Controller to join their team. The Assistant Controller reports to the VP Finance & Controller and oversees the operational and technical accounting activities of the General Accounting, General Ledger systems, and Accounts Receivable units. This individual will lead the day-to-day receivables and accounting functions, preparation and review of financial statements, and play a critical role in managing all external audits and compliance activities.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for leading the day-to-day receivables and accounting functions, such as month-end close, preparation of financial statements, general ledger reconciliation, and financial reporting.
- Manage and mentor the teams responsible for grants, subledgers, financial reporting and general ledger and will maintain a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and identify errors across the department and organization.
- Provides day to day and strategic leadership to the General Ledger systems, General Accounting and Accounts Receivables teams including open lines of communication, setting goals, coaching, training, and supporting career development opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP and company standards, proactively researching accounting issues and making recommendations of appropriate accounting treatment.
- Perform analytics over financial results to ensure accuracy with a key focus on control and compliance while addressing any new technical accounting requirements.
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of accounting systems, software, and processes to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls. Analyze and evaluate business processes and recommend actions to streamline processes and improve operational efficiencies.
- Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements and leading external audits.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- Active CPA required.
- Minimum of ten years of experience with at least eight years in a leadership role; Significant non-profit accounting experience required.
- Experience managing and leading accounting, general ledger, and financial reporting functions.
- Skilled in use of financial reporting & analysis tools. Strong excel skills, financial databases, etc.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels.
