Job DescriptionJob DescriptionMartek is seeking a temporary Accounting Associate to help with the day to day accounting functions.  This is a great opportunity for someone to gain more experience.  The primary duty of this position is assisting in overseeing various efforts of the accounting and bookkeeping matters within the Accounting Department at Martek.  This is a temporary position starting within in the next week and we anticipate it to go through the beginning of 2025. 

Please note due to the nature of this position, we do anticipate that the person will be in the office located on Georgetown Waterfront Monday through Friday.  

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations
  • Support duties related to Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Provide bookkeeping support for Martek and other subsidiary/related entities.
  • Assist in managing the corporate credit card accounts.
  • Provide support with various financial reports.
  • Provide support on month-end & year-end book closings.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintaining our accounting policies and procedures.
  • Assist with payroll function at Martek and provide backup to the Payroll Accountant. 
  • Help maintain organization of accounting team and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements
Candidates have an US based bachelor’s degree in Accounting with previous internship accounting experience.  One year experience in an accounting role previously preferred. 

Applicants without an accounting degree will not be considered. 

Additional Required Knowledge and skills
  • Experience supporting diverse internal customers in a fast-paced office setting.
  • Some experience in an office and/or business environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles. 
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Creative and innovative techniques for performing assignments with ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, clients, company guests, etc.
  • Coordinate projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction and using excellent time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Discretion and integrity in handling confidential information.
  • QuickBooks experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Proficient experience in Microsoft Office Suite and exceptional knowledge in MS Excel is required.
