The position is responsible for providing genetic counseling services and education for patients and staff at Shady Grove Fertility. The position will primarily focus on the process development and management of all PGT-M cases from the point of physician referral to the final selection of the embryo for transfer.

The schedule is working Monday- Friday 8am-5pm in our Rockville, MD Corporate office.

The position is responsible for providing genetic counseling services and education for patients and staff at Shady Grove Fertility. The position will primarily focus on the process development and management of all PGT-M cases from the point of physician referral to the final selection of the embryo for transfer.

  • Development and process management of the genetic services for all PGT-M and at-risk patients prior to ART treatment.
  • Identify workflow and utilization of PGT laboratories.
  • Function as liaison between physicians, patients and PGT laboratories
  • Regulatory:
    • Participation in regulatory meetings.
    • Management of genetics related policies/procedures and special consents in collaboration with the Medical Director.
  • Participation in clinical operations meetings.
  • Management of relationships with PGT and carrier screening laboratories.
  • Function as genetic resource to all REI’s and staff in the field of reproductive genetics.
  • Management of genetics related research in collaboration with the Director of Research.
  • Function as liaison with Legal Counsel to advise on cases related to genetics.
  • Provide data and report trends as they relate to genetics.
  • Provision of genetic counseling to all PGT-M patients including some or all of the following services:
    • Risk assessment based on a review of pertinent medical, family and pregnancy histories, and generation of a three-generation pedigree (when applicable).
    • Education about the presentation, progress, and inheritance pattern of the genetic/genomic disease in question as well as a discussion of testing and/or treatment options using understandable terminology and knowledge of relevant psychosocial principles.
    • Provision of short-term supportive counseling and facilitation of informed decision making.
    • Communication of findings and recommendations to the referring provider following patient consultation.
    • Coordination of appropriate follow up testing/procedures and final embryo selection.
  • Counsel patients/couples for the following indications:
    • Chromosomal abnormalities (rearrangements, deletions, duplications, etc.).
    • Positive carrier status for the same autosomal recessive genetic disease.
    • Positive Fragile X mutation /pre-mutation carrier status (or other X-linked diseases).
    • Pre-treatment and results counseling for patients undergoing PGT-M and PGT-SR.
  • Serve as a resource and educator for staff and physicians regarding genetic/genomic principles and disorders, their management, recurrence risks, testing options, and SGF’s genetics-related policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate communication between SGF and genetic testing/PGT laboratories, including PGT-M case initiation and management.
  • Assist in determining when a referral for outside genetic counseling (cancer, cardiovascular, adult genetics, etc.) is necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Research Operations to facilitate genetics and/or genomics related research.

What You'll Bring:

  • Master’s Degree from an ABGC certified genetic counseling program is required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in clinical reproductive genetics.
  • Experience with clinical process development and implementation is preferred.
  • Understanding of genetic/genomic disorders, their inheritance, and the potential consequences of each in regard to fertility and pregnancy.
  • Knowledge of the scientific techniques used during diverse types of genetic and genomic testing and ability to read and interpret results.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial principles, in particular regarding how they apply to fertility patients.
  • Expertise in explaining complex concepts in plain language for patients and staff.
  • Strong listening skills and empathetic nature.
  • Ability to communicate accurately and concisely.
  • Aptitude to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstration of good judgment.
