The Street Outreach Peer Recovery Support Specialist will work on the streets in a virtual mobile office focusing primarily on individuals who are experiencing homelessness. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist will work in continuous collaboration with community outreach teams, shelters, outreach/case managers, law enforcement, fire department, ambulance services, business owners/operators, faith communities and ordinary citizens. The Street Outreach PRSS will collaborate closely with other service systems, help identify individuals who are not currently being engaged by other care systems, work collaboratively with individuals, businesses, and systems that are regularly engaged with people living on the streets, gather critical information regarding their needs, and helping to formulate plans and interventions designed to help people secure permanent housing and obtain needed resources or services such as legal, financial, medical, social/recreational, etc.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Peer Recovery Support Specialist builds relationships with some of the most difficult to help and serve chronically homeless individuals not already engaged by other care providers.
  • The Peer Recovery Support Specialist will work with the Street Outreach Case Manager, under the supervision of the Street Outreach Coordinator, to help create collective impact interventions aimed at helping people secure housing and services required for the individual, connect individuals to other needed community services, connecting to family and friends whenever possible, making sure the individual is on the by-name list when appropriate, and providing “warm handoff” to other care systems to ensure ongoing housing and care stability.
  • The Peer Recovery Support Specialist will be a living example that recovery is possible by role modeling recovery and wellness in his or her own life, while empowering participants through promoting autonomy, self-direction, and self-advocacy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • This level of experience is usually obtained through a High School Diploma or GED.
  • A valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness; Lived experience with mental illness, substance use and/or homelessness.
  • A willingness to self-disclose about personal recovery and wellness.
  • Agree to respect and observe the Peer Recovery Support Specialist Code of Ethics.
  • Certification as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) or be able to complete the PRSS training and pass the examination with a score of 70% or better.
  • A willingness to work well in a team environment, be self-motivated and results oriented.


WORK CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Employees are required to: walk and climb stairs; reach with hands and arms; be mobile by moving oneself from place to place quickly and easily; carry and lift; climb hills; bend, stoop or kneel.
  • Employees will be subjected to outside environmental conditions while conducting various levels of outreach.
  • Employees will be required to work in areas inhabited by homeless people, to include working in dirty environments and dealing with challenging individuals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and staff behavior.
  • Physical mobility/endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
  • Ability to safely and properly use office equipment.
  • Potential exposure to stressful and/or physically challenging situations that could result in risk to one’s safety.
