Special Education Coordinator

 

Title: Special Education Coordinator

Department/Group: School-based Leadership Team

Compensation:  Competitive base salary starting at $65,000 and comprehensive benefits package. 

Status: Full-time

FLSA Status: Exempt, 12-month employee

Reports to:  MS and ES Principals  


Our School

Houston Classical Charter School (“Houston Classical”) was chartered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to open in Houston in August 2020 beginning with kindergarten and first grade. The school has an accomplished and committed Board, which includes a founding Board and a Head of School. We are looking for experienced, dedicated, and motivated individuals who are excited by the challenge of being part of a new school. Houston Classical is founded on the idea that scholars can learn at a high level notwithstanding their zip code or background.

Houston Classical’s mission is to ensure all scholars Pre- K-8 are successful through a classical approach, rigorous academics, character development, and structured environment to ensure success in high school, college and in life. 

 

Roles and Responsibility for Director of Special Education Coordinator

 
  • Manage the IEPs of all scholars in the school and ensure that all scholars are receiving mandated and “at-risk” services
  • Ensure that all teachers are using proper accommodations and differentiation strategies to target all scholars
  • Manage and Support Para-Professionals, Learning Specialists, Related Service Providers
  • Ensure and maintain a positive relationship with our Committee on Special Education 
  • Ensure that scholars are exposed to an extremely high level of teaching and provide immediate feedback to teaching staff in order to ensure academic and social/emotional growth
  • Establish and maintain impeccable relationships with staff, scholars, families and community
  • Support teachers around behaviour management 
  • Supervise Assistant Teachers on a daily basis during Intervention and preparation time 
  • Monitor and assist classroom teachers with behavior modification programs
  • Hold meetings with teachers around special education issues within the classroom 
  • Plan and deliver high quality professional development for our teaching staff around topics around Special Education 

Expectations: 

 
  • The SPED Coordinator will meet with the School Leadership Team to review issues around special education within the school
  • The Sped Coordinator will have a weekly check-in meeting with the Director of Special Education 
  • The Sped Coordinator will meet bi weekly with the Director of Special Programs
  • The Sped Coordinator will make sure to have visited every classroom on a weekly basis 
  • The Sped Coordinator will facilitate all ARD meetings and maintain compliance with TEA 
  • The Sped Coordinator will lead at least three (3) professional development for parents throughout the year
  • The Sped Coordinator will meet with teachers with behavioral issues at least once a week 
  • The Sped Coordinator will act as a key guide and advisor to the Principal and APs who need to make fast, data-driven decisions and action plans to change adult practice;
  • The Sped Coordinator is an advocate for our school design when it comes to special education, our program 
  • The Sped Coordinator is deeply self-reflective, passionate and committed to world-class schooling and excellence;
  • The Sped Coordinator has meticulous attention to detail and excellent project management skills 
  • The Sped Coordinator is a leader with conviction who knows how to build relationships across teams and can inspire their school community
  • The Sped Coordinator has grit and courage in the face of really difficult work; and
  • The Sped Coordinator is a proven people manager with the ability to set measurable goals to promote advancement of their school community
